Hi,

I’m pregnant and have been having a recurring dream that has been puzzling me. I was wondering whether anyone here would be able to help me figure out if there is some meaning behind any of it.

Some background info that might be helpful:
My husband and I are expecting a girl
The grandfather in my dream passed away peacefully several years ago (we were close when I was younger, but didn’t have the opportunity to reconnect with him until right before his death)
My stepfather and I have had a difficult relationship in the past (we get along okay now in small doses, but he was inappropriate a few years ago)

Anyway, in the dream I am in an elevator/lift of a hospital. My grandfather is there with me, smiling but he doesn’t speak. There’s another person with us as well (but I can never remember who it is when I wake up). I get off on the wrong floor and my grandfather appears smiling again, but it feels reassuring that he’s still there and I get back into the lift, go to the right floor with no dramas.

So then I’m in another room with open spaces and I know that I am pregnant with a boy. The other person is still with me and I am about to give birth. My stepfather is suddenly there, and I tell them that my baby is breech. My stepfather tells me he knows how to turn the baby, and puts his hands on the outside of my stomach and turns the baby around just by feeling through my skin. It feels like it helps, and I am completely relaxed and calm. Someone tells me that the midwife isn’t there, and I tell them the baby is coming anyway. I’m kneeling on all fours and the baby just pops out. My stepfather wraps the little boy in a towel and a puppy appears and starts licking the baby. I start to get agitated that the puppy won’t leave my son alone. I’m calling out that someone needs to get rid of the stray dog. Then I wake up!

Does anyone have any insight about what any of this could mean?

Thanks,
Kristy

Being on all fours ties in with the puppy. Some thing seems to be getting under your skin. The baby boy was under your skin. The act of the puppy licking the baby boy agitated you. Is some thing about your Stepfather getting under your skin?

Well, I notice that it's all men in this dream. The dream even explicitly states that the midwife isn't present. And you are pregnant with a baby boy, not a girl.

From a Jungian point of view, this might be about the "animus," the man within the woman. That is, the dream is about the qualities of your personality that you associate more with men than women. The men in this dream are warm, reassuring, skillful, help you to get back on track when something goes wrong.

The puppy is critical. This is the first time in the dream that something goes wrong that can't be corrected, and it's when a stray animal shows up. A puppy is very different than a man. I think a lot of this hinges on your associations to a stray puppy. Could you tell us what puppies make you think of? What qualities do they have?

So the dream seems to be saying that around this event of great significance to you, a birth, it's the qualities of yourself that you associate with men who help you to feel calm and stay on track. But the qualities within yourself that you associate with a puppy cause you anxiety and agitation. And this puppy interferes with the help the men can give you.

To me, puppies could be considered impulsive, undisciplined, something like that. A stray puppy has no owner, no one to reign it in and control it. But tell us your associations.
