Weird, Unsettling Dream

Hello!

I found this amazing community while looking for help interpreting a recurring dream I've been having lately that I find very unsettling. Maybe you can give some insight?

I am in my childhood home, in the living room. My father is there and my mother too, although she is in the background. I notice a bird on the rug, struggling. My father ignores it. My cat shows up (I love cats and own two), and starts to do what cats do when they see prey. I am telling my father that he is going to play with the bird and probably kill it. He doesn't seem to care. As cats do, he "plays with the bird, taking it in it's mouth, tossing it in the air, and when it lands it's dead. My father still has no reaction but he has a broom and he is sweeping the rug and telling me to make sure I sweep up the other two other dead birds there. Then I wake up. The birds are small..sparrow or robins I think.

A little background. My parents have a very dysfunctional marriage. Dad was an alcoholic for my entire childhood and was not around much. My mother has anger, depression and anxiety issues. She was often verbally and emotionally abusive and sometimes physically. I get along with my parents but live 300 miles away and only see them once or twice a year. I talk to them on the phone weekly but we are not super close, and my father and I don't have the typical father/daughter relationship for obvious reasons. (He's been sober for 19 years-I am 43). I am happily married and have a good life now.

A Bob Cat stalked Squerrel near my camp the other day. Basicly the dead birds have all been swept away, out of your life. The past hurts are gone.
