After being diagnosed with mild sleep apnea through an in-lab sleep study(a PSG), finally got my CPAP equipment three days ago. Now I knew there would be a long adjustment period to get used to sleeping with a mask strapped to your face, as well as the body, generally, getting back to a somewhat normal pattern of sleeping. However, my sleep was HORRIBLE. Constantly waking and falling back asleep and bizarre dreams. After two sleepless nights, manic, with a migraine, my usual pattern.
I'm scheduled to see the neurologist, tomorrow afternoon, but I don't want to use CPAP anymore. And there is a recent abstract in PubMed from Penn State/Hershey concerning two bipolar patients who went on CPAP and became manic from using it. Any personal experiences or second hand knowledge? I need to know. Thanks, all. |

I am bipolar and have slept with a cpap for years now and it has never made me manic. My guess would be the mania would be triggered with your sleepless nights...that's a sure way to go manic! Best of luck!

I use a CPAP machine. I couldn't tolerate the mask as it hurt my nose. I use the nasal pillows and don't have a problem. Perhaps a change in the style of mask you're using would help. Also, the CPAP pressure needs to be set correctly. If it's not set right, you won't sleep well. Sleeping pills for a few nights might help. Could you use the CPAP every other night or so until you get used to it?
Best of luck! It is a difficult adjustment. |

vans & Vossie, thanks for your feedback. Regarding pressure, it's auto titrating & the pressure was prescribed by the neurologist, 4 to 9, which I know is low. I'll see what comes from the appointment.
