I've been having trouble falling asleep for about two-weeks now. I have high blood pressure and take the following medications:
Bystolic 10mg (once per day)
Amlodipine Besylate 10mg (once per day)
Benazepril 40mg (once per day)
Slow-Mag (2 tablets per day)
My doctor has also prescribed Amitriptyline 50mg (just before bed) to help me relax at night. However, I'm still having difficulty sleeping. Some nights I have to take 75mg, or even 100mg of the Amitriptyline to help me sleep.
I read an article that said Beta Blockers, such as those I'm taking can cause insomnia. It suggested Melatonin supplements. But I can't take Melatonin because it can't be safely taken with Amlodipine.
I'm not sure what to do, because my doctor didn't want to prescribe the Amitriptyline in the first place. He only did it because I told him my previous MD gave it to me when I was younger and I went through a period of insomnia caused by stress (the death of my father). So I can't ask him for a larger dosage. I feel trapped between treating my high blood pressure and treating my insomnia. By treating one, I have to suffer through the other.

Is the high blood pressure genetic or caused by something else like poor diet?
