I had this dream where this cougar was going to attack me and I knew I couldn't get away, so I screamed for my dad who was just a little ways away. Then the courgar was right on top of me and dad got there with a sword and he didn't want to kill the cougar, but kept stabbing it. Every time he stabbed it, it got more and more angry and tried to claw him. I was holding the cougar down, and it was on its side, but it was still very dangerous. It had red eyes like it was possessed by something or like it was evil.

What does "cougar" mean to you? I see you are in Texas, I imagine ranchers deal with cougars, etc. but other people call them other things, "mountain lion" or "panther" in other parts of the United States. I was curious though and read your post because I was wondering if you were referring to an older woman, like the new TV show, "Cougar Town" Cougar Town Season 4 Official Site :-) and maybe there was a "bad mother" sort of thing going on in your unconscious or your father had a mistress at some point, younger than your mother (my grandfather did) that sort of thing, like an older woman may have "preyed" on you and you wish(ed) you had an older male, father-figure sort of person to help you with those feelings/situations?

I was talking more of the sense of mountain lion. I don't know how it relates to my father, in the dream. It might. I'm thinking maybe I should look up what cougars mean in a dream. Maybe that would give me more insight. But, I do want my dad's support more now that my mom is dead, so maybe that is why I called to him for help.

"Life" could be like the cougar trying to devour you?

One dream dictionary said this:
Quote:
Cats in dreams represent feminine power. Cats also deal with esoteric knowledge, and spiritual guardianship. White cats represent heightened spiritual awareness. Black cats signify hidden secrets or hidden powers within the dreamer. Wild cats encourage us to exercise our will power more. Tame cats indicate a place of comfort in our lives.
From: Animals In Dreams - What Animals Symbolize in Dreams

That makes some sense to me with your mother gone?

You are Controlling the Cougar within. Your Father is part of you that is controlling it.
Thanks for this!

I'm thinking I know what it means. My mom is guarding me, but the coguar is a wild cat. Maybe since I don't exercise my own power enough, then my own power turned against me and attacked me and dad tried to help me not "attack myself" but didn't want to kill the cougar, because it represented my own strength. He was just trying to help me get my own power under my control. Since he is a parent and is connected to mom, maybe she was guiding him to help me in the dream...that might be why it took on the form of a cat, because I am a female. I think the cat represented me in a way. Thanks for your help.

Your interpretation is good one. As I say, the dreamer is the best interpreter.

Thanks. It was just confusing at first, because I didn't know why my dad wouldn't kill it and was only keeping it subdued, but now I know what the mountain lion represents, so I get why now. Thank you all.
