Sherrie Bourg Carter, Psy.D. talks about:10 Frightening Costs of Sleep Loss | Psychology Today Death is one of them.

Any Good News?
The good news is that for many of us the amount of sleep we get is a choice we make. We have just one more thing that we want to take care of before we hit the bed, or one more email that we think we have to respond to, or one more something or other. Hopefully, this article will make you rethink that "one more" mentality that so many of us have developed in this 24/7 world we live in and replace it with a healthier mantra for our future selves—"One more hour of sleep can ...

keep me in the workforce until I decide I'm ready to retire
keep me looking and feeling years younger
keep my brain neurons alive and thriving
help me keep my weight down,
keep me healthy, and
hopefully, add years to my life."

Happy dreaming!
Sleep deprivation no doubt contributed to the severe burnout that cost me my career.

Befriend your bed.
Thanks for this!

I really don't have a lot of sympathy for those who CAN fall asleep but choose only sleep 5 hours a night so they can work more and make more money they spend on crap.

Many in here do not HAVE that choice. Many have real sleep disorders that prevent them from proper sleep. That is not a choice.

Please don't lump us together with those simply not taking care of themselves.

Neither I nor the author lumped anything.

There are also those documented studies showing a positive benefit to voluntary mild-moderate sleep deprivation proving an antidepressant effect.

I posted links to some of those studies in another link (where?) recently.
I will find them again and post here again later this morning.

Yea I noticed that when I was depressed, sleep deprivation could be a real lift.

So.. yea glad I'm fully in control of my sleep... LOL. Like I control everything in my life. Wow God why did I chose a sleep disorder?

Sleep deprivation has been a problem for me for over 10 years now and in my case it not by choice. I don't have the "I can get one more thing done" mentality. I usually fall asleep within 10 minutes of my head hitting the pillow but I usually on sleep 1 - 1.5 hours then I'm wide awake and up again for hours.

My dreams seem to be what wakes me most of the time, also often I stop breathing which really wakes me quickly.

I have had sleep studies, EEGs, breathing machines, many different sleeping pills, meditation and yet the problem persists. Sometimes it makes me just a tad irritable and unable to think properly.

If I actually got 3 nights good sleep and started to feel better my head would explode from all the sudden mental clarity.
