Anyone know the latest on Ambien (Zolpidem) laws for doctors prescribing it to patients with psychiatric issues?

It's not really laws as much what insurance will pay for. My doc prescribes 10 mg a night. He gives me a prescription for 30 but insurance will only cover 10 so I pay for the rest out of pocket.

My insurance covers Ambien and I get 30 at a time with 6 refills. but I take it rarely, only when the nightmares are so terrible I need to sleep.

Maybe it is because my Primary Doctor prescribes my medicines and not my Therapist?

My primary doc also prescribes mine, 30 at a time, and I get it filled at Walmart. But last time I saw Pdoc he said I was 'dependent" on it, which is apparently a diagnosis of some kind, less than addiction. But since it's because of anxiety that I can't sleep, I think it makes a difference legally. I totally don't sleep without Ambien to get me there. The FDA is so concerned about people driving under the influence of residual Ambien, but what can be worse than someone driving who hasn't slept for days? Sheesh! They even have laws that truck drivers have to take 10 hrs off every 24 to prevent falling asleep behind the wheel. I just don't get it about the Ambien rules. Big Brother is here! If my therapist, an LMHC, says I need Ambien, will my pdoc have to prescribe it?

Good news. I straight out asked my pdoc if he was going to continue my Ambien prescription even though he declared me "dependent" on it. He said yes. Apparently a talk with the psych nurse where I have psychotherapy helped him realize how a decent night's sleep is very important to help with psychiatric anxiety that aggravates Insomnia. All so complicated.
My pdoc bypasses medicare, just writes me the scrip on paper and i get it from WalMart as Zolpidem, 30 for $7.49. But ya'll are probably way ahead of me on those strategies!
I'll be glad when i don't need anything from doctors and "authorities" as it just makes life difficult trying to get what one needs just when least able to deal with such hassles. I hear the pain medicine ordeal is the worst predicament of all for those really hurting and legitimately trying to get their prescriptions filled.

Wasn't aware of any changes. I refill only the ten that insurance pays, takes a couple months plus before I refill, for the most part. My sleep improved since changing the venue of where I life. Also changed the kids school start time schedule and am up an hour earlier than before. The pharmacist explained flagging upon questioning my very first script and why written for thirty and only ten are covered. That was years ago.
