does citalopram cause really vivid nightmares? Because I think dreading what will happen if I actually fall asleep is making my insomnia worse and the dreams are starting to really stay with me and make me very uneasy during the day.

Eleanor, your psych doc is the best one to contact if you are having side affects from your meds. It sounds like doing that as soon as possible could help you avoid sleep deprivation.

If you find reading about meds helpful there are some blogs and posts about Citalopram that might be of interest.

(((Eleanor))) I've never seen this listed as a side effect for Citalopram but that doesn't mean it's not possible as we all react differently to meds. Do you recall when you started having the nightmares and the last change made to your meds at that time? Perhaps it's one of your other medications? I agree with CANDC, it needs to be addresses as soon as possible so that you don't become sleep deprived. You could also call your pharmacist to check out the side effects of all your meds if you can't get a hold of your prescribing physician. Best wishes

I just had bad insomnia from citalopram, no nightmares that I remember. But a bipolar person shouldn't be on an SSRI alone. I was misdiagnosed at the time.
