When i'm getting close to falling asleep i start to hallucinate. I'm told this is normal. It usually starts with the occasional word from a thought, but then becomes loud ringing and buzzing, with annoying spikes in volume. It doesn't sound llike it's coming from anywhere, so it's definitely internal. It isn't like a thought, because I can hear it. Any tips on how to stop it? Or do I just have to deal with it.

I get that too but in my case it's a mans voice. I take Abilify for it and it mainly knocks it out (except for certain times). Good luck.

I grew up with something called exploding head syndrome. It means sometimes as you fall asleep or wake up you can hear loud noises. I was really sure a bomb had gone off but everything was normal which scared and confused me and no one else had woken up.

Something that is important with this is not to be sleep deprived, that really makes it worse, or did for me. Also I benefited some from taking some quiet time before sleep, for me it happened more if I went from activity straight to going to bed and sleep.

It didn't fully go away until I was around 30 though.

I had all of the above ^^^ happening when I was falling asleep at a time in my life when I was extremely stressed, anxious, and feeling very hopeless. I was in an abusive situation at the time. Now I'm living in a pleasant, happy place. I'm not being abused and I'm not a stressed, anxious mess. My sleep is peaceful...no more weird noises. I truly didn't realize that the stress/anxiety was affecting my sleep until I was out of the situation.

Hmm, I have gotten this too in the past, but never thought much of it. For me, it usually happened when I was fighting the urge to fall asleep. My reasons for fighting the urge to fall asleep sometimes included me having homework that needed done, but most times it was because I would wake up from a frightening dream and be forced back into it. So fear is definitely a factor for me. I don't know if that means it is universal, though.
