Um, hi. I sleep almost everyother day for about 4 hours. When I do sleep I have dreams of traumatic experiances I have been through. When I wake up depression and ptsd kick in and it is getting to be too much to cope with. Are there any suggestions?

Dakuliu, this sounds like a serious medical condition. Talk to a doctor why you are not getting the right amount of sleep. Then be tested for sleep apnea. That will trigger bad dreams and all sort of things. It also can cause heart damage not getting enough rest. I would call your doctor ASAP. tc

It's kind of a useless answer unless you choose to pursue it, but I think therapy might help you.

If you have been diagnosed with PTSD then it is imperative you seek help. It has been proven that PTSD has a profound affect on sleep and moods. If you are a veteran and near a VA facility make an appointment. I have chronic insomnia with moderate sleep apnea. I cannot get somnolence so I do not use the CPAP. A lack of oxygen will cause muscle and nerve pain in addition to slower reaction times, reduced concentration, loss of interest, appetite and other problems. Your bed and sleep may become places of fear which you may begin to avoid.

There are various approaches to PTSD and insomnia and only a professional can lay them all out for you. I have used various sleep aids with minimal results but also have been carving out the thought patterns that create anxiety. Unfortunately this is long process and it's nice to have someone to support you.

Google PTSD and insomnia and pinpoint your symptoms along with looking into the plethora of meds. Avoid OTC meds. Take this info to your first appointment and be clear and precise to the provider.
