I think I'm piecing together something, I don't know what though.

It started with dreams of looking into the night sky and feeling a sense of foreboding and extreme fear and vulnerability. Like something would appear in it and swallow me up, never to be seen again. Sometimes ships would appear in the sky, sometimes huge planets, or even an amazingly enlarged moon in which I would see reflections of Earth. All of which would scare or unsettle me to the point of panicking.

Then more recently, I had a couple of dreams where little grey alien beings came into the room where I was sleeping. They would be surrounded by a hazy smoke and make strange vocalizations, like clicking noises an insect might make. I would feel such an intense fear, and couldn't move or scream or do anything but look at their horrible faces, with enlarged black almond shaped eyes and tiny mouths and nose slits.

Am I remembering something? Or am I just going crazy? Is my subconscious trying to tell me something? I just don't know.

There's one possibility in that you're experiencing a variant of sleep paralysis...

--> If your paralysis is hitting with your eyes closed, making it to where all you see is darkness, two things can happen. First, the darkness is left to be filled with imagery from your subconscious. Much of this (the space imagery and the reflective moon especially) relate to a gaining of some new perspective on things... a new view of the bigger picture. This can be especially scary and overwhelming if you were unprepared for it.

The aliens sounds like a carryover from the space theme, but taking the standard "trapped by a monster" reaction many people have to experiencing sleep paralysis....

I love this thread. I've not been in your position, but reading it made me think of the X-Files, and conspiracy theories, (I love reading different conspiracy theories). And I believe in intelligent life on other planets because I refuse to believe that humanity is as good as it gets! With the way the world is I hope there's enlightened beings out there who don't murder, rape, torture, war ect.

My post has no baring on your life at all, but there's always one Mulder, and today it's me. I hope you get the answers you need about the sleep paralysis, but seriously, you should consider writing fiction. I'd read it. I write too, and some of my most out there dreams inspire some of the best written work.
