Hi,
It is sleep without REM you need! REM means that you're waking up already!

No, everyone needs REM sleep.

There are negative consequences of not getting REM sleep

Effects of Not Reaching REM Sleep

You usually know you have had REM sleep if you dream.

Hi Miissy,
Take it from me; the general idea about rapid eyemovement and stages of sleep are completely wrong.
I studied sleep, not only from books, papers and conferences but olso by observing people and animals sleeping and waking.
Generally rapid eyemovements start when the sleeper becomes uncomfortable and experience some pain or external interference during sleep. Rapid eye movement REM means that the sleeper is watching a very fast dream. Some dreams happen in a fraction of a second!
The subconscious is a very powerful entity and is quite separate from the brain. It can create a dream scenario and dream story line instantly. I personally witnessed dreams that happened in less than a second and and it took the sleeper on waking more than 10 minutes to recount the story line of the dream.
Onef the main problems of psychiartry is that the present state knowlege about the interface between the the brain and the subconscious is not yet understood. No body knows what consciousness is and how we "exist".
