Hydroxyzine hcl for sleep???

i've only got mania and usually 1/2 or a whole 25mg. seroquel gives me great sleep, and stops the ruminating thoughts at bedtime, but after using for a few yrs. i'm wondering if it has pooped out on me.

i've got an appt. end of month with psych nurse and found some old hydroxyzine hcl in medicine cabinet that another dr. prescribed for anxiety and insomnia a while back and am thinking of trying the hydroxyzine tonite.

would appreciate your personal experiences as to what amount you take and does it knock you out and give you a decent night's sleep? thx.

hydroxizine does nothing for me except stop itching if I have an allergic reaction to something. Ive heard people call it a poor mans xanax.

I know it has been used as a sleep medication in some prisons. Standard sleeping pills, like benzodiazepine drugs (ex: Restoril,) are generally not allowed to be used in prisons.

Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine, related to Benadryl, which is also sometimes used as a sleeping pill. Hydroxyzine has been found to reduce anxiety.

In prison they give pretty large doses of both hydroxyzine and Benadryl. Can cause you to wake up with an uncomfortably dry mouth, which BTW is bad for your teeth.

I was prescribed hydroxyzine for sleep and it doesn't do much for me. I've been diagnosed with bipolar.

I use hyrdoxyzine as a as needed medication for my anxiety .. it doesn't do too much besides make me a little sleepy, that's when I take 3 though. That's how the dr prescribed me to take them for anxiety attacks.

That's really interesting! I didn't know that it was prescribed for anxiety. I take two for sleep.
