I just started taking a new medicine that has made feel drowsy and sleepy today. I hope that I can sleep tonight. Anyone ever use hydroxyzine to help them sleep?

The brand name is Vistaril and is used for anxiety as well.

I noticed that it has taken me awhile to get some sort of sleep after taking hydroxyzine for awhile.

That's probably a good idea. Caffeine has a long half life. Have you tried Melatonin ? It seems to work for me. Plus some " white noise " , and a very dark room.

I'm sorry to say that I was prescribed Vistaril a few years ago for anxiety and to help with sleep. I gave it a good try, about 2 months. It didn't help at all with either problem. You might try posting your question on the Medication board. I'm curious to know if anyone is really helped by Vistaril.

The suggestion @moodyblue83 gave about melatonin is a good idea. I also sometimes use ZzzQuil or Tylenol PM if I'm having pain that is keeping me awake.

That not a bad idea to do. Sometime I take a PM for the physical pain I am in.

I was prescribed Hydroxyzine, partly for anxiety and partly for sleep. It does tend to slow down my racing thoughts (which helps), but didn't provide very much in the way of sedation unless I took more than 1 25mg tab.

I currently take Escitalopram 15mg & Trazadone 50-100mg for depression & frankly, the latter seems to provide more of a path to slumber for me.
