COLOR="Purple"]Does anyone else here use self-deprecation to get a laugh, for sympathy or just to prove you're not holier-than-thou? I think I have damaged my own self-esteem as a result.[/COLOR]

Hello, kjv2acts. I avoid self-deprecation because I view it as negative self-talk, and, perhaps, a cognitive distortion. I maybe a stuffed shirt, I suppose.

Self-depracation is okay now and then, but too do it all the time, I think you might of been using jokes to try and cover self esteem.

Comedian's use it at the start of shows so can relate to audience that a human being and not above them cause on the stage.

I used to do it because I was on the cocky side of things.

I've never done it for sympathy.

If you picked it up from someone, maybe their why the low self esteem.
If you're nervous about something yeah, but if don't address whatever nervous about, and keep joking, gonna get obsessed with problem, but self esteem wouldn't of be high any way if was over doing it.

Watch some comedians on stage (youtube or something) might help.

This and brutally sarcastic seem to be my natural states.

I find I use it to cover up my lack of self esteem. Like, if I make a joke out of it people will think it doesn't really matter.

I've found that I can now say I hate myself with such confidence no body believes me.

I do it a lot. I feel better when I self deprecate. I don't know why I do it. I think it is a sort of self-defense mechanism. You can't kick a man who is already down.

I think this thread is in the wrong forum but I'm really glad I stumbled upon it.

I self-deprecate a lot and then get frustrated when I'm not taken seriously. I thought I did it to make myself and others comfortable. But maybe it does have to do with low self-esteem or I'm worried about being judged and rejected so I beat em to the punch.

But I've always immediately liked people that self-deprecate... I more relaxed around them. I think it is an endearing quality when I find it in others.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
