I found a song last night by Alanis Morissette. I like Alanis Morissette, but I don't remember ever really listening to this song. I am glad I found it. It's beautiful and I wanted those of you who haven't heard it or read the lyrics to hear it and read the lyrics. Also, I thought it was relevant to the self esteem improvement section.

I know a lot of us feel like we are not "good". And like we are "unlovable". Many of us judge ourselves more harshly than others do, also. Many of us feel we must be "perfect". Many of us feel, when someone else doesn't love us and we love them, or when they abandon or hurt us, it is because we are not good enough.....because we are not lovable. This song is about accepting and knowing that you are good and you are lovable, even when you aren't perfect, and even when someone else can't (or chooses not to) love you or be good to you.

It makes me feel better in a way, though I must admit, when reading some of the lines, I did think, "But no I would not be good or lovable if I did that.....and I do it, and I'm not good...." even though if someone else was concerned, I'd tell them they were still good. I guess old beliefs surrounding self hate and feelings of worthlessness, being bad and unlovable, aren't easily overcome. I still think this song is uplifting....even though I'm not at a place where I can easily accept believing all of this all the time, where myself is concerned. I think it will speak to a lot of people.

It is called, "That I Would Be Good". I hope it is okay to list the lyrics here as long as I give the proper credit, which she is due. And I also advise you to find this song and listen to it. IF you look it up on youtube or somewhere like that, I've noticed some people did not upload the entire song, so you have to search for the full piece. It should be about 4 minutes and 18 or 20 seconds or somewhere there abouts.

Here are the lyrics.

That I Would Be Good
by Alanis Morissette

"That I would be good even if I did nothing
That I would be good even if I got the thumbs down
That I would be good if I got and stayed sick
That I would be good even if I gained ten pounds

That I would be fine even if I went bankrupt
That I would be good if I lost my hair and my youth
That I would be great if I was no longer queen
That I would be grand if I was not all knowing

That I would be loved even when I numb myself
That I would be good even when I'm overwhelmed
That I would be loved even when I was fuming
That I would be good even if I was clingy

That I would be good even if I lost sanity
That I would be good whether with or without you."

This is great you did not mention looks anywhere in this...I know you have in the past but there is so much more to EVERYONE than their looks, and I do believe this song adresses that, it is a character driven song, and character is what drives EVERYONE, wheel chair bound folks, burn victims, we are all beautiful people inside and out and everywhere!!! Alanis Morisette is a CLASS ACT, it is more power to everyone that she took the time to write this song and get it out there!!!! Your part of the post about whether someone chooses to love you etc....I am single and choose to love MYSELF (& everyone here at PC) Let us all choose to love ourselves and not be hard on ourselves, like you wrote, if it was someone ELSE we would tell them they had value..

...Let us all look in the mirror and tell ourselves earnestly, "I have value...am not perfect.....but am trying my best...life is a journey...not a destination.....and I love taking the journey with ya, myself

Another good song for raising self esteem. Thanks for sharing. Normally, I will sing "Hero" and "Beautiful" to build more esteem. This one is on my list now
Thanks for this!
