I got into an argument with my sister this morning and afterwards I managed to make myself cry by telling myself these things over and over...

I didn't handle that like an adult at all (dad had tried to calm things down by saying "we're all adults here"...ha Attacking myself)
But I'm going to be 18 in four months
My sister handled it better than me and she's almost three years younger
I'm never going to be an adult, I'm a stupid kid and always will be
What hope have I got?
None, none at all...

I would never say these sorts of things to anyone else. Yet I don't seem to have a problem saying them to myself... Attacking myself

And it's funny how it's only when I see them written down that I can understand how much I was over-reacting. Attacking myself

You are becoming an adult - look at what you wrote!

You wrote down what happened, and that you could reflect back and see that you might have been able to handle it better. That's alot more then most people do!

Awareness is half the battle - keep plugging away, you are doing great!

i think sometimes we hadndle things better, sometimes worse. we can learn from situations but we can`t COMPLETELY avoid from making mistakes and sometimes doing nonsese, because we are human beings...damnit. ;-)

i agree with the post above.
"I didn't handle that like an adult at all (dad had tried to calm things down by saying "we're all adults here"...ha )
But I'm going to be 18 in four months"

the judgmetal though about what you did in the past means this situations - doesn`t matter. what matters is that you understand NOW you didn`t hadnle it the best you could,..so you have your conclussions for the next time....

i suppose you KNOW you do have hope...you understand you were over reacting.

I agree with both posts above. We all say things we don't mean/want to say in the heat of an argument, and there will always be moments of "Oh I should have said..." afterwards. Reflecting and learning from mistakes is the best thing to do. We aren't all given knowledge of how to handle situations, it usually takes trial and error to discover them.

Rio, you should see the stuff I have written in my therapy notebook. And I'm 20 years older than you. I guess I have no excuse, huh?

We all make mistakes. The adult thing is that you can recognize it when you make a mistake, and then do what it takes to make it right. If writing helps you to do that, then keep on writing!

Rio, you're pretty hard on yourself, but you are on the right track, and you have enough motivation to make it. You are one of the people who can really rise above, because you can use your challenges as an opportunity to learn and improve yourself. I really admire you. I wish that I had the sense that you do when I was your age.

Thanks, tranquility. This is something that's been worrying me for a while now - turning 18 seems like a huge step, and I'm not sure I'm ready. Attacking myself But I'm glad you think I'm doing ok. Attacking myself

Thanks for replying, ladymacabethadmunsen. That's true. Attacking myself

Good point, thanks. Hopefully this particular argument won't happen again - it was about whose turn it was to do the washing-up (we take turns to do it each Sunday), and I made a rota so now it should be clear. My sister sometimes uses the fact that I have a poor memory to not believe me when I said who did it last, but hopefully she will believe me if I write it down! Attacking myself

I do understand, although like I said it took until I wrote it down for me to realise. Attacking myself

Thanks for replying, Rapunzel. Sorry you do this sort of thing as well, but it's good to know I'm not alone.

That's true. Writing certainly does help! I was in a lousy mood until I made that post.

I know I am, but I have no idea why. Attacking myself Wow, thanks! Attacking myself I hope so, I've had low self-esteem for pretty much as long as I remember...

Thanks, ladymacabethadmunsen! Attacking myself It's something I try to do whenever I can (sometimes if I get a lot of replies at once it's too hard to keep track and reply to each person), it's good to know it's appreciated. Attacking myself
