what causes this in a person? Past experiences like what? i used to be so happy, i used to not care what anyone thought about me. I was loud and obnoxiouse. i dont know what ever happened.

Well, that eliminates that one. At 20, it may be insecurity of career ahead or the load from college classes? Spotting the conditions that cause it is the way back to a cure.

Being bullied at school and elsewhere
Negative parental comments
Negative comments from mental health professionals
Being told off and or punished when you have done nothing wrong
Being invalidated

I have to say I've often wondered this too... I think part of it must just be in you, without having any outside influences. Or if youre a perfectionist, maybe having no positive release for your perfectionistic tendencies...

These can also be signs of low self-worth. They are used to cover up how you feel about yourself. Maybe you just got tired of the fascade?
