i have pretty much divorced my parents emotionally due to their horrible treatment of me. I would like to change my last name back to my biological name. I was wondering if anyone here knows anything about how about how long it takes and how much something like that costs.

I found this, for use in Texas. It's a $25 kit, but I'm assuming there are additional costs to process applications and the like:

I'm glad you've managed to separate yourself from your parents and their treatment of you!

i'm glad you're keeping your first name. When i divorced my adoptive parents, i changed my first and middle names (my last name is/was my married name and not linked to them). i'm not sure i regret it but it seems to have caused a further separation in self. i have a dissociative disorder and feel very separate from the person i was before i changed my name in 93. It's not like one day i was her and the next me...it just seems to have complicated things a bit more...especially when it comes to thinking about myself or talking about myself as a child. i wasn't Kristyn then, i was Debi. How do i connect to Debi when i'm Kristyn? It's probably more ddnos than name change but just thought i'd let you know for your informed consideration.

Anyway, i understand the step you're taking. It's very powerful and if it feels right for you then YAY! i needed to do it as well and am glad for it but, like i said, it can be complicated internally.

Holy CR**! There's other people like me? I was adopted & abused. Had to divorce the parents after all the abuse and had to divorce my kid after she tried to kill me. I'm only 4'11 and she beat me up since age 12 cuz she saw her step father do it. Sorry if thisis OT, buthaving areally bad night...(anniversary trigger)
Point is I'm glad I'm not the only one. Strength & Love to you

Yeah, it totally sucks when the world tries to feed you the chosen baby story (how lucky you are to be special=be grateful you were chosen) while all the while you're being abused. i didn't ask to be born a puppy at the pound but, by God, if you're gonna take me home, you damn well better not torture me!

I am planning a name change for the same reasons - hate my birth name! I have one of those names that people almost always shorten without asking. I NEVER use the shortened form but people use it all the time. It's what family always called me, mother still does. I'm at the point where hearing it nearly makes me feel physically ill. Of course, I can't say anything to her because she is perfect and Never did Anything - I'm just a liar. Please don't ask me why she is still in my life.
I've asked my closest friends to use my chosen name now and that helps. Names are so powerful and if the one you have has horrible associations then I support you changing it!

you are not the only abused adoptee. One of the reasons this board is here is so we know we are not alone and in just knowing that, it helps.
