So I'm at a game right now with my ex, his/our friend, my current (who he doesn't know I'm dating), and my sponsor… I got triggered, and now I'm trying to keep myself under control enough to concentrate on the game and not flip out.

I've been drinking, which has helped but not in way that it should. I'm eating which usually helps, but is does anyone have any subtle ways of not dealing with being triggered?

My ex was not my abuser, which is why we're trying to stay friends, but he has many of the same mannerisms and that's why we broke up. He triggered me while we were cooking, by accident, and I haven't said anything to anyone yet.

But yeah, ways to help? Besides staying on the forum?

Focus on something stable like can or box of food and start reading the labels. Focusing on each word not necessarily the meaning of the entire sentence. It works with anxiety attacks so hopefully it will help with triggers, too.

Dear Switch,

Probably the suggestion is coming too late.....but atleast for next time....

1. Try playing some mobile games....something simple that doesn't take too much of your attention.

2. Try some mental games. My brother and I used to love playing game called "world building" as kids. It's like you start with A - say any city....and the next city you name should start with the letter that the prev named city ends with - say.....Austin...Newcastle....Egypt.....Thailand....Denmark.....get the drift? You can also try Naming capital games....some mental game....maybe even sing song in your head.

3. Look at images of food - like cake...pastries....etc. Or flowers....

I love food, nature and travelling....I guess distracting yourself is the best way. You can distract yourself with things you like doing.

Good luck!
