I am currently in an abusive marriage.I have 4 years of medical documentation and police intervention. It started after his sister was murdered.I tried to get him help but he would rather talk to his alcoholic buddies. He also tried to "sell my services" and his stepfather attempted to take him up on the offer. This is just one of many daily inicidents. So you ask why have I not left..the economy.Housing is impossible.I am currently on a 5-6 year waiting period just for one apartment complex.I am disabled and have contacted every aging/disability resource in our state. They either are overwhelmed or budget cuts have restricted their resources.I am working with the local domestic abuse shelter which is overwhelmed with clients.I am receiving counseling, going to al-anon,getting medical attention etc.I cannot afford a lawyer, the minimum in our area for a retainer is $3000
to $7000,one lady wanted $2,500 just to talk, another gets $500 every half hour.Just a brief overview of what I am dealing with.Oh yes I recently found out he took over a life insurance policy of tens of thousands of dollars on me without my knowledge..I got this pack of info in the mail welcoming me to this out of state insurance company.Deja vous,,the murderer of his sister did exactly the same thing and the DA could do nothing as it was out of state and their laws are different.Same insurance company, same deal.I do not qualify for pro bono work. The shelter tried , the medical community tried.I was told if I just take off he could sue me for abandonment..The shelters where I want to re-locate as it is 3 hours away, are int he same boat..overwhelmed or restricted by budget cuts. Why 3 hours away? He would have to stop at a bar on the way and hopefully get stopped driving drunk. Please any ideas,I see one of my doctors today,he is "racking" his brain as well. Thanks Last edited by darkpurplesecrets; Feb 11, 2014 at 12:18 PM. Welcome to Psych Central, tiny.
Your situation sounds very drastic to me. No matter how crummy the state economy & cut-backs are, I haven't ever seen women's shelters affected. There are lots of programs set up, with independent funding, to keep safe housing always alive as an option. In the midwest myself, I can't help but wonder what state you're in. ![]() National Coalition Against Domestic Violence Domestic Violence - National Hotlines & Resources - Feminist Majority Foundation I hope that you look through the sites listed above for clear information and helpful links to get yourself into a safe place ASAP. Very gentle hugs and best wishes sent to you. ![]()
