Is it normal for someone who has been sexually abused as a young person to have thoughts of doing the same to others? I would never actually do that to someone, but I have had those kinds of uncomfortable thoughts come into my head and they are very distressing to me. They make me feel dirty...

Yes, it is. I am sorry you are struggling with this. A therapist can help you understand why you have these thoughts and what to do with them.

Abuse can definitely go in cycles - all kinds of abuse.
The fact that you're aware of the thoughts and that they're wrong shows that you are going to be able to stop that cycle though! A therapist would be able to help you work through these thoughts, and to help you feel less ashamed of them. ![]()

Thanks for responding. This kind of thought process has been on going since i as 13 or 14 and being abused. I would never hurt anyone or abuse anyone, but the thoughts have come into my mind and I have problems being around kids, not because i would abuse them but because of what I am capable of doing. Does that make sense? I am in college and I have withdrew from a class that I need to take because I have to volunteer with teenage kids, I panicked and withdrew and i feel awfully terrible about it.

Looking into seeing a therapist would greatly help you and benefit you. They can help break down those walls you have up and process those thoughts that you have. The fact you know that they are wrong and haven't acted on them in anyway is a great thing! You need the help of a therapist though. Look into going to see one at your school or if that is too close for you, ask for some recommendations of therapists in the area from the ones at your school. You can also use the site psychologytoday.com to look up therapists in your area.
