I haven't read this article, but the issue of false memories is not a black and white one. It is likely that none of our memories are entirely accurate - each time a memory is recalled, recounted or retold it is reshaped and amended somehow. It is definitely not an all or nothing issue... there is likely truth in scientific studies that show memories are malleable and can even be created out of nothing, just as there is also likely some truth in repressed memories that resurface years later. How MUCH truth is in them is the contentious issue that nobody can prove beyond a doubt, short of external corroborating evidence.
Thanks for this!

I agree with Luce. It is known and proven that memories can be constructed and influenced by things other than what actually happened. However, that does not need to invalidate what you feel about your experience. Yes, there are people who do not believe that abuse can be forgotten and then remembered again, but a lot of those people are those who have been accused of being abusers or have other reasons for wanting to deny the existence of this phenomenon (such as just not wanting to believe that this can happen, or that abuse is more common than we think). I have often internalized the doubt of memories being real, and I hope that this is not happening for you. Symptoms and memories happen for a reason, and unless your memories were uncovered using hypnosis there is a good chance that at least some of it is accurate.

I seem to be having false memories. Although, they're making me feel uncomfortable and upset, I just associated them as being dreams.

Remember that our abusers are/were masters of manipulation, brainwashing and gaslighting.

Gaslighting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

How convenient for them (the abusers) to utilitze the term "false memories"!

First they implant their own "false memories" into the minds of their victims in order to confuse them about all the evil @#$%! that's being done to them.

Then they claim their victims are suffering from "false memory syndrome" when they (the abusers) are finally confronted and called out for all the evil @#$%! they've done!

The Most Disgusting Double Dip Ever!

Discussed this in therapy today ... Needless to say, my therapist and I firmly believe that "false memory syndrome" is indeed a rare thing ... The vast majority of us who grew up in violence and abuse may have had to repress the reality of the @#$%! we were living in so we could endure it, but that was necessary to ensure survival.

Exactly what were we supposed to do? ... We were helpless children who happened to be dependent on our abusers for our very survival ... Food, clothing, shelter, etc ... Outside of running away into a whole other uncertainty, we were STUCK in the hell holes we were living in and had to learn how to cope & deal with it the best we could ... How disgusting of adults to be this evil to innocent little children!
