My mother has been put into a nursing home. I haven't seen her or spoken to her for six years. The church she goes to have contacted us. Hoping we will visit her. They don't know what she has done. I feel guilty but she has never admitted any wrongdoing.

You are in no way obligated to go visit her, especially if she abused you as a child.
If she abused you, you also have no reason to feel guilty over not seeing her because as far as I'm concerned, she made her bed and she, alone, has the responsibility to sleep in as consequence for her abuse towards you. If you do wish to go visit her, please carefully contemplate as to your reasoning. Is it out of guilt, or for some other reason such as needing closure? If it's solely because of the former, don't go because that will only give her power over you that she doesn't deserve. |
