-are there places you can get them outside of hospitals?

-is there any point to them if you’ve showered a couple times?

-do the nurses ask questions or push you into talking to cops?

-how much more does a person want to kill themselves after?

I found the r**** kit was worse than the r***. The hospital was cold and uncaring. To me, it isn't worth it.

For your last question, my answer is much, much more.

First question - no. Rape kits cannot be found over the counter, in stores or anywhere other than a hospital emergency room.

Second question - yes, because taking a shower does not remove all the evidence.

third question - yes and you may not have a choice.

4th question. the rape kit does not cause a person to be suicidal. its a medical exam just like going through your once a year physical.

for those who do not know what a rape kit is and may want more information than the quick answers....

Rape kits are considered medical equipment and "forensic evidence kits" to help prosecute domestic violence / sexual abuse crimes.

A Rape Kit is a medically sterile sealed box that contains

1. Instructions for a doctor,

2. a victim questionnaire document for asking the victim questions and taking their statements by the nurses and doctors,

3. a check list and check list order/ protocols for the doctor to follow,

4. special evidence collecting bags, jars, microscope slides, Petrie dishes, vials / tubes, syringe and saline for a saline wash, a fine toothed comb (similar to a lice or flea comb, q tips, tongue depressors and other medical equipment for taking photos, labs, swabs and more that medical doctors use for gathering medical evidence of crimes.

the kit box is a box of medical equipment.

think of it like sample sizes of everything you see in your doctor's exam room, on the counter and cupboards while you are sitting there prepped and ready for your once-a-year exam.

Doctors use the equipment in the box to perform the same exam you have once a year for a physical and also take pictures of your bruises, scrapes and cuts, scars. and comb any hair on your body.

with a regular yearly exam everything used by the doctor is thrown away and they send off the labs. with the rape kit nothing is thrown away and everything for the labs is sealed up in evidence bags.

when you go to your doctors and have your bloodwork labs done you dont get to take those vials home with you right, they go to the lab. the rape kit labs dont go home with you. they are processed by the doctor for transport and sent to the lab....

the evidence (labs) and the equipment used to gather the evidence are medically sealed in the sterile evidence bags in the kit, complete with the examining doctor's and attending nurse's signatures.

When the examination is complete and all the sealed evidence (lab swabs and so on) and equipment used to gather the evidence are back in the box, the rape kit box is medically sealed, taped and then the medical doctor and attending nurses' signatures across the tape.

the special seal, tape and signature ensures everything stays safe from damage and tampering.

its now ready for the police forensics to take over the evidence. the kit is safely, medically stored to preserve the collected evidence of the crime until it is handed over to the police forensics team.

a forensic lab team picks up or sends for the evidence.

they must sign documentations to preserve the chain of evidence.

just like normal labs, the evidence is safely, securely medically transported to the forensic lab for processing.

at the forensics lab the forensics team verify with signed documentation that the kit has not been tampered with and then it is placed in their medical evidence storage where it is preserved and waits for processing.

it can take many years before the rape kit actually gets processed as the processing system is sorely backlogged in most places.

once the evidence is removed from your body it no longer belongs to you, it belongs to the police and forensics labeled as "evidence in case number"

most USA states are now on a mandatory reporting system where emergency rooms must contact the police and sexual assault crisis counselor, if they treat a victim of a DV or SA crime.

if you live in a mandatory reporting location you will have to talk with the police.

some states the victim doesn't have the choice of whether they prosecute or not. if you live in a mandatory prosecution of DV, SA crimes location. they will question you in great detail and investigate and prosecute the abuser with or without your help. they prefer with your help.

the rape kit is just a box with medical labs to gather evidence in a crime.

going through the rape kit exam does not cause a person to be suicidal. no more than say going through your once-a-year physical with your medical doctor. its more painful because you are all bruised and such. but it doesnt cause a person to be suicidal.

most people I know including me that have been through the rape kit are angrier at their abusers and want their abusers caught and prosecuted. which of course is why they do the rape kit to begin with.

a rape kit is for the police to use to catch the abuser, prosecuting the abuser. its not like say a rapid at home covid test or home pregnancy test. its medical equipment used by doctors that helps the police catch the criminals.
