So I've been sober 2 & 1/2 years now and for the first time I've heard someone say to me that they want what I have. I didnt know how to respond...it was someone I've known through the program for 13 years but only has 15 months. I dont know...it was just awkward.

It isn't easy to answer a question not expected. So what I have done is go back the next time and ask them a followup. Like "I want to thank you for what you said about wanting what I have. No one has ever said that to me. I was tongue tied. Thank you so much.
Was there something else you had a question about that I might try to answer or clarify about what I said?" This builds the other person's self esteem and also gives you a chance to say anything else needed.

Why do you have to say anything? Saying even 'cool' would work...
I get annoyed with people in AA who just spit out slogans or lectures or act like an expert because they have a week longer of sobriety... But that's just me, a lot of people get something out of that type of encouragement. |
