This is a place where people can have safe and supportive discussions about their journey with a 12 step program.

This is not a place to discuss your views about whether 12 step programs work or are right for everyone. This is only for the support of people who are currently in a 12 step program, or who would like to be, or who benefited from their time with the 12 steps in the past.

Enjoy!

DocJohn

Thank you for this DocJohn. I was in a 12 step group that was not AA. It did wonders for me. I would be still attending had I not moved and there is not one in my area. People need a place to able to express their positive experiences.

If I am right this is a new section and thank you for it. My experience in AA most likely saved my life. I love the philosophy.

Hello everyone. I'm new to PsychCentral. I struggle with a drinking problem and just made an appointment to get counseling/treatment. I know working the AA program will be part of that journey. I have tried AA in the past but stopped going because I was too shy to share. Will I ever get over this fear? I'm going to try again and I wanna have that courage to share and truly connect with others this time. Any advice on how I can go about doing this would be much appreciated. Thank you.

You don't have to share. Just go and sit and listen. You will find that after awhile you will hear something that may really make you want you to share. Just say I would like to listen. Probably some people will come up and welcome you before or after the meeting and try to reach out. Just take you time.

Thank you, zinco14532323. I think that sounds like a very good idea and so that's what I'm going to do. Thanks!

I have SAD and also can't seem to speak in a large group, so I found some really small meetings...much easier to get to know everybody and talk there. Large meetings can be overwhelming!

Do the 12 steps vary depending on what type of addiction you have?

In my experience they are all the same no matter what twelve step group. Except the first one. "We admitted we were powerless over alcohol and our lives had become unmanageable." Just substitute alcohol for anything. The rest are the same.

Some religious groups might do a variation of them but AA, NA, CA, MA, over eaters, gambling....all the same.
