hello everyone, i just wanted to ask which drugs increase the serotonin effect in the brain? and which drugs combined increase the effect of serotonin? I know that ssri works on serotonin but i've also red that maoi's combined with ssri's can actually work better than if you only take one ssri. finally do you know which combination of drugs are better for treatment resistant depression? i have tried many antidepressants combined with citalopram but no one works...

I don't think anyone is the same. MOAI's are not given with ssri's . 80% of serotonin is made in the stomache but it does not cross the blood brain barrier. SSRI's stop the release of serotonin at the synapse thus in theory leaving more serotonin at the right place onthe downside your brain only has so much and they have no way of measuring serotonin thats all I know. hope it helps

The amino acid 5-htp converts to serotonin in the brain.

Quote:
Sometimes when necessary a psychiatrist may cautiously combine more than one antidepressant but there are serious risks of toxicity if not managed carefully by a specialist. The most serious is serotonin syndrome which can lead to shock, convulsions and even death. This link might be helpful, but remember to cross check anything you read on line. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin_syndrome My Pdoc point blank refused to make certain combinations due to the risk of serotonin syndrome - he didn't want to poison me. Best wishes as you try to find a way forward. ![]()
