medication resistant now 10 2017 at age 67

I would like to know if there is a senior out there who as had ECT of TMS in senior years and how it worked for them.
I'm in Central Florida north of Tampa Bay, hard to find doctor doing ECT especially on my insurance Medicare/Optimum.
Any help will be welcomed.
Keep on keeping on.

I am 60 and have been taking ECT for almost 4 years. I have it every two weeks. I have my insurance still through my employer asI am still working. I have had no problems and am able to return to work right after the treatment.

I hope you can find someone to do the treatment with your plans. Are you on any meds now?

Hi one of my co being treated womenhas gone through ECT and she reports forgetfulness of certain events such as pleasurable vacations. I don't know exactly how old she is but maybe between 45 and 55. I have been dealing with MI for over 30 years and situation is am still near bottom of mountain. Feeling bad today. Nothing new. Seeing new psy NP for another opinion tomorrow. Have recently been hospitalized and have seen psy MD about 8 times since end of July. Need to work again. Anyway would be happy to support empathetically .

Ect treatments can be very helpful for some while others ECT doesn't help at all. I think your on the right track researching it. It does effect the memory though. I would speak to your pdoc and maybe family physician as well as getting second opinions. Then you can weight the pros and cons and make an educated decision that is right for you, remember it's what your comfortable with. Wishing you all the relief possible! Hugs xx

ECT has been a contentious issue for years. What does an electrical shock actually do for depression anyway?
I guess it is sometimes seen as a last resort by professionals. Depression is a combination of a state of mind by rumination that causes lack of REM sleep that then causes a lack of neurochemicals Serotonin and Dopamine and Ephinrephine (adrenaline)
To get back in balance a good diet, medication, a determined mindset are very important factors to getting better.
Exercise is essential and keeping busy as much as you can. People do overcome depression. I have 2 serious bouts of depression in the past 10 years.
Best wishes

Chris

Here is an article by a mental health professional that debunks some of the myths of ECT as it is now used and show how it can be a valid option to restore health.

ECT has really helped my suicidal ideation, which is strong and ever present. It has allowed a pause in the loop tape that plays in my head. I am forever grateful for it.

Your "mind and thoughts " are all a product of electrical impulses. Like was said , ECT is an effort to change those electrical impulses and break the "loop" , that is running your present thought patterns. I believe that changing neuropathways are the key to developing new and constructive "loop patterns " that can help change how we think. ECT is one of many ways this can be done.
Best of luck to you.

I am 62 and have been wondering about ECT also. It's so discouraging when nothing else works.

I’m 59 and went though a round of ketamine infusions last fall. Kicked me out of the negative mood while for a short time, but am struggling to keep it going.

My mother had very successful ECT treatments here in central Florida. We did the treatments for about 2 years and it really made a difference in her life.

I am also 62 and wondering about ECT. My meds pooped out after four years, but my doc just prescribed Rexulti. Hope it pulls me out of this depression! I would prefer not to do ECT, but if that’s what it takes, I will willingly do it.

I had ECT at 26 eight rounds over four weeks. It gave me fever dreams for a year! Very first time I was really forgetful but I was right as rain after the following ones.
I didn't sleep and just went about normal business.
I know from speaking to the nurses that it is known to lift depression that the medication fail to do with some people . I needed it at time as I had melancholic moods in the morning. I havent needed more. But If I had to have it in future, I know that there is no danger. Just bad dreams lol

I myself have been trying to get a ketamine infusion for my unrelenting despair-depression. How long did the better mood last? I have had 55 rounds of ECT and they worked for maybe a week at best. Then you have the memory loss- which I thinks is par for the course of ECT.
