Hello everyone
I'm a newbie to this forum but not to depression. I've been struggling with it for at least 50 years, and when I read about your experiences my heart breaks. On top of that, many of us have the burden of family and friends just not accepting our word on what we're going through.

So I've been on Prozac for about 25 years, my doc added Wellbutrin a few years ago and I'm still sinking. I've had the MTHFR genetic test which shows that I have the mutation that inhibits the metabolizing of folic acid.

My question: Does anyone take l-methylfolate along with their antidepressant and has it helped?

Thanks!

Hi Deb1553,

I am sorry you suffer with depression, too.

You've asked a great question!
I need to try long-term supplementation with l-methylfolate. I had forgotten about the MTHR mutation until you have mentioned it here.

Thank you!

Hello deb: I'm sorry I cannot comment with regard to your concern. However I noticed this is your first post here on PC. So... welcome to PsychCentral. Here's a link to a PsychCentral Professional article, from PC's archives, on the subject of L-Methylfolate. Perhaps some of the information in this article will be of some help:

Here are links to some other articles that offer tips on managing depression:

The article about l-methyfolate is extremely helpful!! Thank you so much! And I'm going to investigate the other links you sent today.

Of course my insurance doesn't cover Deplin or the generic l-methylfolate so I was reluctant to pay a lot for something that isn't proven. I did find several manufacturers who sell what looks like the same thing on Amazon for a reasonable price, but I'm going to check with my doc and probably try the folic acid first, as the article suggests.

Thank you all for the support!

I think when I was taking it I used this. https://www.vitacost.com/jarrow-form...cg-60-capsules There's a couple other ones on vitacost. I usually get all my supplements on vitacost because it's the usually the cheapest place to get them.

Many of the supplements do not have a high enough dosage, FWIW.
Check on the daily amount needed in order to have a therapeutic effect.
