Sleep What is the best med for sleep. If I can sleep well my depression lifts somewhat

Hi Shannondell. Welcome to Psych Central. I am sorry you are having problems with sleep.
I have a friend that has depression that is prescribed medications to deal with depression and lack of ability to sleep. Since everyone reacts to meds differently, for these it is best to see a psychiatrist or doctor. If you want lifestyle changes that might help you sleep there are over the counter things like Melatonin, Chamomile Tea, yoga to help relax to sleep, and mindfulness like the Exercises also help me relax too like 5 minute Tai Chi There are others that I find helpful so feel free to reply to this post tagging me @CANDC and let me know how it is going. __________________ Super Moderator Community Support Team "Things Take Time" |

Like CANDC said you're gonna want to try lifestyle changes first, in addition to what he wrote make sure you have no caffeine after about 2pm, and stay away from anything with a lit screen after 6pm-ish, and take a hot shower in the evening (the cooling down tends to make people sleepy). If that doesn't work go to a doctor, and ask about medications. I will give you my personal experience with severe insomnia, that temazepam is about the only thing that works for me, but if you're in the grand old usa you'll need to go through a few other meds first to get a prior auth to actually be able to pick up the script.

I, too, am struggling with the very same issue. I have insomnia due to other mental illness, and I have been getting maybe 3-4 hours of interrupted sleep per night. The lack of sleep significantly has an adverse reaction on any progress that I've made (or so it feels like), so I can empathize with what you are experiencing. My doctor prescribed me xanax for sleep which I find to be slightly helpful. But, last night, I took benadryl for sleep, and I finally slept through the whole night. My lack of sleep has made it to where I am having significant difficulties with telling the difference between what was a dream vs. what is reality. It's very unsettling as I feel like I am losing my grip on reality. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I designed and went through my own sleep training and its been the best thing. I used to take some sleep meds and they are not good for me. Especially now that I am an alcoholic. Plus some of them have been linked to short term memory loss and alzheimers. And I sleep walk.
