In the midst of some people's complaints about widgets, I discovered a way to block them on two specific web browsers, Internet Explorer and Firefox.

So to help people out, here are my instructions. This may depend on the version of browser you use as well. If you experience problems, or have been able to block this in another way, please leave a comment below!

.............

In Firefox -

First, you need to install a specific add-on, called "Adblock Plus". To add it, go to Tools --> Add-Ons --> In the dialog box, click "Get Extensions" --> "Adblock Plus" is in the 'We Recommend' section on the right.

Once you have it installed ... go back to Tools menu --> Click "Add filter..." and then type "widgetbox.com" and then "Add filter" again and type "widgetserver.com" --> Click Apply, then Ok!

That should block you from seeing any displayed widgets! It is also useful for blocking any advertisements, like any here on PsychCentral!

.........

In Internet Explorer...

Click on "Tools" --> Internet Options --> dialog box will open --> Click the Security Tab and then click Restricted Sites --> click "Sites" button --> type in 'widgetbox.com' and click Add, and then type in 'widgetserver.com' and click "Add" and then click Close and that should solve the problem!

If a widget doesn't go away; there are other places to get them from besides widgetbox, or someone might make their own, etc. Just right click on the widget/image and look at "properties" and find the website where it is from and put that in your filter/restricted site place.

Good point ((((((((((Perna)))))))))))) - I just used widgetbox because it seemed to be the most popular place to get them. But you're totally right.

Of the 40,000+ members, I wonder how many appreciate having the widgets (time since last event) and how many object.

I was just considering installing one to track myself and wondered this same thing. I'm glad to find these opinions posted here.

Seems like a good motivator for individuals .... watching the days in an official way rather than a vague (Oh, it's been a long time since I did that).

Businesses use a similar count up sign to keep track of the number of days since the last lost time accident or the last traffic accident.

Maybe it would be good to hear just how the counter "bugs" some people or maybe even if it is a trigger. I'd like to know a little more about it before I decide.

Thanks to Clyde for showing us how to block the widgets!

Troy

The widgets have nothing to do with this site or whether people like them or not, they're part of individuals' signatures and if you like/don't like a particular person's signature you can certainly PM them and tell them the trouble you're having and maybe they'll change it for you.

I don't think many people have widgets anymore since the first time they were complained about a month ago, before this latest brouhaha, several people took them out of their signature, in deference to others; there are only 4-5 members that still have them looks like to me.

One of the biggest problems with the widgets is that they come from another site and have to load each time a person's post comes up and that takes additional time, loading that page so if several people have widgets in a thread, which use to be quite common, that means the thread is slower to load.

If you block the widget in your browser, it doesn't block the rest of a person's signature, just the widget. So you still see everything, just not whatever widgets are being generated from whatever location you are blocking on your machine. That also takes care of the slower load problem, if one was aware of that because of the widgets.

They're things at the bottom of a person's post, things like count down since last drink, stuff like that. You can get a widget for nearly anything. They can be anything from a simple count down to a link to view a TV show like lost (looks like a little youtube box). Many many people had some silly ones for awhile, they were huge and as Perna mentioned, made loading a page take twice as long.

What's the difference between a Ticker, Widget, and Counter? I assume these are things that people get off the Internet??

Then, they are different from hyperlinks or URL's???

I'm not very "tech-savvy"..... Someone enlighten me a bit more? What's a WIDGET BOX?

I believe that the dragons are widgets, they're not really hyper links but they do come from other sites. They're like a mini program.

Most people that have widgets here now are the ones that have them in their signature that keep track of how long it's been since they've had a drink, for example, and it is keeping track in real time. Changing before your eyes. Other widgets you have to click on to activate.

There are widgets out there for just about any interest. I was at www.abc.com at their Lost sight and you can get a Lost widget. That one will play like a commercial for the show that changes each week.

I'm so sorry. I don't see any ads, but what are widgets? Like I said, I'm not computer-smart enough to be here, but I am drawn here and won't go down without a struggle to do the right thing! Thank You - billieJ

I believe that any message board that deals with medical conditions or any sort or neuro or psych conditions should block the widgets and any of the flash stuff like animated gifs, etc to make the site more accesable to people with disabilities. I hear this argument on message bords all the time, people complaining that it makes things run slow, etc, but I hardly ever actually hear anyone complaining about it as a accessibility issue. For someone with photo sensitive seizures, it can make the site imposible to go to if there is a bunch of flashing widgets around every corner. For someone who uses screen readers, assistive technology or anything like that (that would be ME) it makes it that much harder. Personaly, I dont mind looking at them, and there dosent seem to be many of them around here, but some forums it seems every person has one, along with a signature that spans the whole screen, ugh. When you have all this junk clog up a forum it just makes it that less accessible
