I would say no that an accurate smear cannot be taken during menstruation. I say this as prior to my hysterectomy l had alot of bleeding on contact with my cervix and was told that the blood cells were obsuring the other cells. But if in doubt ring and ask whoever is taking the smear. Hope the infection gets sorted real soon
take care

no i dont think they can. i know i've had to rearrange if i've been on my period during a smear.

if you have an infection, call your dr. they usually know what to do without a smear unless you think it's an STI

Nah, same infection I got last summer in my wet bathing suit. Rang up gyn to refill antibiotics and explained situation. Same infection as it feels, looks and hurts the same. Feels like my tampon applicators are made of sand paper. Glad I am not sexually active as that would be horrible! Sorry if it's tmi...but you all just saved me from a wasted trip to my gyn. That would have taken half a day on the bus. Will check my prescription history tomorrow. Hopefully it was refilled. Thanks ladies!

N.F. - So glad they called something in.

I did just have a conversation with OB/GYN about taking a cervical smear during annual exam if having a period, and yes, they can, no problem. However, as she said, she too would probably reschedule when she wasn't having it (unless she was having symptoms and needed an answer) but they can do it and won't impact the results.
