I had this sudden sharp pain in the area where your ovaries are and where you would normally get cramps. I thought it was just cramps but then I went to get up out of a chair and my breath was taken away because I had this absolutely horrible tugging feeling down there like someone was trying to pull my insides out. It hurt SO bad. When I didnt have that tugging pain, I had a lingering ache in the area. I called the nurse advice line 2 hours later when I still had the pain. They told me to go to the hospital but I didnt. I couldnt move it hurt so much. I layed on my side and stayed still. I had already taken risperdal so it knocked me out. When I woke up the next morning the shrap pain had gone away and I just felt kinda sore but ok. I was at the Dr for something else the other day and asked her about it (shes actually a nurse practioner) and she said it probably was a cyst that ruptured that was there because I was ovulating and that it would probably happen again.

I am due to go to the gyno anyway so I made an appt and I am going to ask them. Do you think its stupid to ask them too since she already told me that?

I don't think its stupid. And, if you KNOW that's what it is...I wouldn't go to the ER. If you are unsure I would definitely go. But after going to the ER a few times and having it only be a ruptured cyst I just deal with it. The only thing is that now I wonder if sometimes I deal with it when it really is something that could get taken care of. If you do go when you are having this pain they will do a pregnancy test and, if an OB is on call, they might do an ultrasound. When you tell your OB your symptoms they will prob want to do an ultrasound anyways.

One thing - if they tell you to have a hysterosonogram....prepare yourself. That was the day I learned to never trust a MALE obgyn. He said "it should feel just like regular cramps". BULL HONKY! I cried for hours afterwards and it felt almost worse than a cyst rupturing. Just as a warning. However, them doing it allowed them to see over a dozen cysts in each ovary and a polyp in my uterus. So it is good to have the knowledge.

It's a sonogram, but they insert an ultrasound probe into your vagina for better imaging. I had several...they told me it would be just like a tampon (yeah right, a tampon the size of a football) I don't want to scare you. It really is the best way for them to get the images if cysts are the culprit. Definitely talk to your gyno about it. While most cysts are mild and harmless, some can be dangerous and you could also have something else going on...

What made mine worse was that, because he said it wouldn't hurt that bad, I agreed to allow the students to sit in on it. I was holding back tears the whole time and as soon as I got in my car I started bawling.

Basically they put a ton of saline in your uterus and then, like CSC said, they insert a probe into your vagina and they can see malformations or whatever by how the waves bounce in the saline. Another nurse called it a sonohysterogram. It's the same thing though.

My stepmother told me about that maybe 20-30 years ago and agreed with your analysis, salukigirl and I've kept my radar tuned so I don't ever get that if I can help it! She was definitely not a wimp when it came to pain so if she complained, it was bad.

I can relate to that experience. The second ob/gyn that I've seen recently, who was a male, said the same exact thing.

I would be concerned about not going in to the ER if you are in a ton of pain, even if you know its a cyst. I had a couple of cysts on my ovaries (I needed to have surgery but was waiting for my insurance to kick in), a couple of them burst. I was in an incredible amount of pain. My BIL (long story) took me in. When they did the vaginal ultrasound they discovered the cysts had ruptured. When I said something about, I just shouldn't have come in then. The ultrasound technician said "NO, its good you did come in. If a cyst on your ovary bursts it could make your ovary twist. If this happens and it isn't corrected very quickly it can do great damage to your ovary and could result in a lot of other complications."

I would definitely talked to your gyno about it.
