I'm 49 and haven't had a period in about a year and I know that is because of menopause. Well, I have suffered from severe depression & had suicidal tendencies since I was somewhere between 10-12 plus a lot of mental issues and disorders. The menopause has aggravated all that but the problems were always there. My sister has decided that the only cause of all that is simply menopause (menopause at 12?). I don't understand, she has seen how I've been all these years. How do I react to that?

Menopause may affect our emotional outlook I am told, but there is an awful lot of depression in women that is not menopausal. I am a case in point. I am not thre yet but not that far away. My hormones are all over the place and my depression ranges from mild some days to severe
It seems that to dismiss your difficulties as merely the change of life is rather inconsiderate and not understanding of the toll that depression takes in our lives. People who do not walk that road find it easy to advocate easy answers. It sounds a lot like all the unsolicited child rearing advice I got with my daughter from people who had never had children. Thank goodness we do not have to rely on self appointed relatives and friends for medical advice. You get what you pay for. |

shortandcute,
Well, your emotional difficulties that you've been fighting since age 12 certainly can't simply be attributed to hormonal changes. That's ridiculous! Maybe you are pre-menopausal, which adds to emotional ups and downs of life that you're experiencing. I have experienced the physical/emotional changes a few times in my life: after I stopped nursing my daughters, and then again after a major surgery. My emotions were intensified. Depression increased shortly thereafter significantly. I did, however, see my doctors when these major changes in my mood occurred. If your doctor has been seen recently and knows how you're feeling, and you're being treated medicinally as well as T, I would feel comfortable. If it has been a while, maybe you should give your T doc a call, to see if some changes are appropriate. __________________ "Only in the darkness can you see the stars." - Martin Luther King Jr. "Forgive others not because they deserve forgiveness but because you deserve peace." - Author Unkown |

Although menopause could simply make some symptoms a bit worse ....its incorrect to blame all that on menopause. Its silly the way some think the M word is such a death of life. My husband tried to say I should be fine without sex to support what he did, since I was going through menopause....in other words menopause would make me not want it all. Honestly I didn't feel one single difference at all and never had any of the common symptoms. Don't listen to lies like that.
