I'm trying to eliminate meds that cause weight gain (which happen to be all the meds I'm taking) and I'd like to find an alternative to birth control that does not cause weight gain...is there even birth control out there like that? And how does it work?

Thanks

I assume you are thinking about pills. I don't know about those, but, of course, there are other birth control techniques (such as condoms) that aren't associated with weight gain! I never took "the pill" because I didn't like the possible side effects.....

I don't think condoms are safe enough to take alone.

Also, I take the pill because my period is irregular and abnormally painful.

You could investigate fertility awareness based methods or simply the pull-out method, both in addition to condoms (I realize alone these are terrible methods of birth control, but combined with a condom, I think they're fairly effective). Also make sure you're using condoms correctly -- putting it on before his penis comes near you, leaving space at the end for the sperm to go, coming out right after, etc, etc, etc. I would be wary about spermicide because I've heard it can cause problems, like sores which would aid the spread of STIs.

Here's the Planned Parenthood Birth Control Chart. Maybe that will be of some help:

Birth Control Chart

On a side note, I've never had any weight issues with birth control, and I also think different types of pills will react differently with each person (just like regular meds.. some people have this side affect, others have that one).

Here's a link to something on PP that helps you pick which type of birth control is right for you:

My Method - Choosing Birth Control Methods

And good for you for wanting a backup method, being aware of side affects, and proactive in finding information!

Try a different pill. There are many pills. The concern with the weight gain from the Pill is exaggerated, overall. The Pill is not Zyprexa in the way it affects the weight... that is for sure.

DrSkipper has not had children; usually, you wait for your first child before you get an IUD inserted, although I have read about cases when IUD's were used successfully in nulliparous women (=who have never given birth). Traditionally, the concern was with future fertility. I am not up to date on it, though.

Glad it works so well for you!
