Implanon

I went through the old threads about Implanon here and was just wondering if anyone has anything new to add about their experience with it. I am planning on having one put in today. Im not sure if they'll do my pelvic exam and the implant all in one visit but I hope they do. I've got three kiddos so my husband is taking off work a little early so I can make my appointment time.

I read a lot on the net about Implanon. There are alot of mixed reviews. But from what I gathered the first 3-4mo are tricky with periods showing up and hanging out for weeks at a time and sometimes just spotting every day, every other day, etc. The general consenus was that things level off and get normal after those first few months. I talked a pdoc yesterday who thought hormonal birth control could be helpful for me. But I still don't know how to determine if I need estrogen BC or progesterone BC.

Any thoughts?

Well I had my appt. They had to give me a Depo shot (that lasts 3months) then I go back in 3mo and get a 2nd Depo shot and three months after that they do the implant. They want to be sure I tolerate it well because once it's in they won't remove it for 6months. Makes sense. If the Depo shot gives me crazy periods or just crappy side effects it's only three months and I can try something else. I'm still not sure about whether or not progestin or estrogen, or a combo of the two would be best or how to even begin to figure that out. I guess it'll just be trial and error.

Is this forum still active? Or did I just post about one of those things no one wants to talk about?

I had the implanon and LOVED it! I stopped having periods while on it. If I ever need to go on birth control, I will go back to that.

Unfortunately it is trial-and-error or success () with hormones and how your own body reacts with them since our chemistries are so different; also in how we tolerate any side effects with them. I don't have any experience with Implanon but a friend also had depo-provera shot intially for 3 mos, then the implant, because she had no side effects and it stopped her periods during this time. I did not have this experience with the depo-provera shot and had to go other routes.
