I'm not even in a relationship, let alone pregnant, but I've been thinking about it a lot lately, being that I've just turned 31 years old and I am not getting any younger.

I am wondering if it's a good idea to think about having children what with bi-polar and the medications I take? I'm not particularly motherly, but it seems I'm crazy about having a kid. I just don't know why.

It depends on a lot of things. How severe is the bp? Which meds? Are you able and willing to go off some or all of them?

I have bp ii. The depressions are crippling but hypomania is manageable. I had a son on just Lamictal, although it was hard because that is an insufficient med for me.

Good luck!

I'm on Abilify, Effexor, and a new one called Buspar. I am pretty sure I'd have to go off of at least the Abilify and Effexor as they aren't safe for a developing fetus (known to cause birth defects/deformities), but don't know about the Buspar.

I'm pretty much dependent on my meds to keep me sane. Without them I get crippling depression, like you mentioned with yourself. The Buspar I just recently started taking, so that I really don't know much about yet.

It's tough. Abilify is by far the best drug for me. My docs would have actually allowed it, with the warning that there is not a lot of research on it (although nothing bad has come out about it yet either). I didn't feel comfortable with that, so I switched to Lamictal, which has many years of good safety research. I think it does something for me, but it isn't great. I actually was just trying for a second child, but my mood got so bad, that we decided to take a break for a while and go back on abilify for a while and reevaluate what we want to do going forward.

It sucks. My husband gets to take whatever meds he needs and still have kid(s). It's hard to be a woman.

Latuda is in pregnancy category B, it's the only FDA bipolar drug I know of that is in this category, everything else is in category C or worse.
