i hate shaving. i know some may find that gross but it's hard enough to motivate myself to shower, let alone shave everything.
yesterday i wore shorts with my hairy legs because it was hot and i just didn't care. i even went into the supermarket that way and picked up my daughter from school.
usually i cover it with pants, even if it means sweltering in the heat. i felt very self conscious but strangely liberated at the same time.
anyone else feel like this?

I do not wear shorts despite hot weather 99% of the time. I try to shave most days but don't bother if I am depressed.

I usually only shave during the summer, then keep my legs hairy during the rest of the year. I'm dating someone so I am more motivated to shave.

My bf doesn't want me to shave and I'm too lazy so I totally feel ya! I went to a festival rockin' the Sasquatch legs with a skirt but no one said anything. I still feel a little self-conscious since they're as hairy as my bf's and very long, dark hair. Still deciding if I will give in and shave. ;P I also don't shave my arm pits or anything for that matter. Haven't touched a razor since last summer. Maybe we can start a Women Against Razors revolution!

I wonder why women are expected to be hairless?

I agree smoothielover! If more women stopped shaving it would be easier. Good for you for rockin it! Would be nice if my husband felt that way if he did I would never touch a razor again.

You should just start jokingly making fun of his hairyness. That's what I do to my brother when he makes fun of me, I pull up his pant leg and pretend to gag and be totally grossed out by his leg hair. It's also what I plan to do to any man who makes fun of my hairy legs. lol

I like this strategy. Nevertheless I wear long pants when out. At home even with people here, I will wear capri-ish pants though, and the long dark hair shows then.

Since I have neither working electric in my bathroom or water in my house shaving my legs is low priority. I can shower/shave at the gym but lately I've been not motivated to do so. I used to wear dresses or nice pants/capris and makeup but anymore I just don't care. I'm on an AD for a week now so hoping it will help my mood.

One wonderful thing about being older.....hair isn't growing on my legs or under my arms that much. I get hair on my legs just around my knees but nothing below that & very little under arms that shaving every few months takes care of....never thought there would be this much benefit to this stage of life....but NOT SHAVING is one of the huge perks...not having a period is probably the largest perk of all though.....know the hormone stuff makes them go hand in hand....but the rest of me feels ok....so great, the stupid hormones that make hair grow is gone also.

Interesting, I thought it was testosterone (that we all have varying levels of) that made hair grow. At least until you have too much of it, that is.

I don't know, I've got really dark, long, thick hairy legs, but my head hair is very thin. It seems like if I had a lot of testosterone to make my legs so hairy, I would have more of a libido... lol

There are genetic and other factors involved too. Genetically I've been stuck with a damn lot of hair to start with. I have a thin crown area on my head and a mix of coarse/thick (everywhere) and fragile/thin hairs (mixed in and around my crown) that I suspect are supposed to be all of the coarse and thick variety (much though I'd personally prefer thinner strands). The back third of my head has the thickest hair growth. In my particular case, I suspect that the low iron I'm currently on supplements for is causing the thinning and causes hair to fall out (mostly in the back of my head right now), while hormone imbalance from hypothyroidism has caused the front of my head not to grow as much hair as the back (aka "male" pattern baldness). The one good thing about having so much hair to start with is that it makes these things easier to hide.

Back in the 70's I stopped shaving but for counter culture reasons. Mostly I wore maxi dresses so it really didn't matter. But somewhere along the line I started to shave again until about 2 years ago when I got depressed and simply didn't care anymore-- that and I had back surgery ( I've metal on my spine)so bending is a real problem now. Still shave the pits, but they are easier to reach.

I don't like to shave but I do. I found the Gillette Venus with the the gel bars. They are expensive but you don't have to lather. Just shave.

This is great! Some days getting out of the house is hard enough.

I've not worn make up or straightened my hair in months. It's been such an energy and time saver. Now my routine to get out of the house on weekends is almost as quick as my husband's.

I don't think I'll be shaving as often this summer either. I hate it too.

I finally shaved up to my knees this morning before going out in mid calf-length cargo pants. God that's a lot of work and I didn't even do a whole leg! :/ I admit it felt nice feeling more of the breeze on my skin and all but I'm not so sure if it's going to be worth the upkeep. One thing I learned though is that old conditioner that doesn't work for your hair can still make awesome shaving cream.

@Tea Biscuit: You're right, it really does save time and energy.

I went to my daughter's softball tournament with out a bra this weekend. My legs were probably hairy too but I didn't notice. I woke up but didn't want to get out of bed until the last minute and she didn't set her alarm so we scrambled out the house with her trying to decide whether to glare at me for waking her up too late or to be in a bad teenage mood because she had to wake up early. It was funny but I forgot my bra. Maybe we should bring back burning your bra. I find a lot of ladies now a days are very fierce and stuck up towards each other instead of celebrating being woman together. Or instead of no bras, which is a bit uncomfortable, we could start a movement to hug someone a day, instead of getting people to throw ice water on us for a cause.

well i broke down and shaved. also stood in front of the mirror yesterday and cut all my hair off. i don't know what came over me i just wanted that long hair gone. and in my messed up brain of strictly black and white thinking since i cut the hair i had to shave the legs and pits lol. now i guess it will all grow back but i still have to come to terms with not shaving my legs and having short hair on my head. seriously it was giving me anxieties last night and i couldn't sleep. it would be great if i'm going to worry i at least worry about something more meaningful and important. oh well. i'm so depressed i don't even care my hair looks like crap.

you all sound awesome though and it's cool so many of us say f-it when it comes to the feminine upkeep. I think I will go back to my natural state eventually...

I have been there quite a few times. My hairdresser begs me to quit cutting my hair. I am convinced I am artistic but I am not when it comes to being a hairdresser. I send you a long hug and say gently to you that it's okay. Take care of yourself, be gentle, from over here you look like a special interesting warm person. The world is a sweeter place with you in it.

Thank you so much curry. I keep cutting it it's gotten to the point where I put all the scissors and mirrors in the house in a corner of the basement where I need a ladder to reach them. The razors too. Makes me long for the depression when I didn't have the energy or care. Have a call in to the pdoc this is going too much in the other direction. Thank you for your kind words.

I hate shaving my legs and I will usually pull it off once every week unless I have been bitten by mosquitoes on my legs...then I will not because I'm afraid to get a scar from shaving over the bites. Mosquitoes are rampant here much of the year.

As eskieLover says, one of the great things about getting older is having less hair on my legs. Frankly though, I know it's great to be liberated and all that but personally, I think there is nothing more awful looking than hairy legs on a woman!!!! But, each to their own.

well, I have been out and about a few times this year so far in shorts, with, while maybe not hairy legs, but certainly extreme stubble. No one said anything, no one died, and I carried on my merry way in comfort.

Wearing shorts in and of itself is sort of a victory for me - I'm a chubster with super pale skin. But man, life is just too short to not wear shorts when it's hot outside.
Thanks for this!
