I got a bladder infection a couple weeks ago, and the pharmacist said to use a back up method because the antibiotic interferes with the birth control. Anyhow... I've been off the antibiotics for a week and I'm on the sugar pills and have my period... can I still get pregnant? I've heard you can get pregnant during your period. My fiance and I were debating this, we regularly have sex during my periods, we both enjoy it more due to the extra "lubrication" plus it lessens my cramps. I don't want to get pregnant though...we got in an argument the other day about it.
He said he'd rather not do it than use condoms Any help? |

Hmmmm, I don't know how long the antibiotics stay in your system. Its highly unusual to get pregnant on your period, but it does happen. So if you'd rather use a condom and he refuses, its up to you if you want to continue and risk it.....

You are correct that anti biotics can lower the effectiveness of birth control pills (some more than others). Unfortunately many people don't realize this and their pharmacists fail to tell them. Yes, it is possible to become pregnant while having your period. Not likely, but possible. My advice is when in doubt, be cautious. It's difficult to answer your question exactly without knowing what antibiotic you were taking. I suggest asking your pharmacist and be careful until you know for sure.

"Pregnancy can occur from intercourse that takes place during a period. This is because sperm can live in the body for up to five days, and if a woman ovulates soon after her period, then conception could take place from intercourse that occurred during her period."

If you've been off them a week, you should be okay unless you are on Zithromax or something that is only a five day treatment but works for ten days.
My advice: Call a 24-hour pharmacy and ask! I've called, even if I didn't get the prescription there, and they ALWAYS answer my questions. |

I hate to be a party pooper, but I got pregnant because an antibiotic wiped out my birth control pills and nobody told me that was a possibility....be very, very careful.

This is why I am on DepoProvera. Antibiotics don't mess with that stuff.

Be careful with the Depo! Yeah, it's great stuff, works like a dream. But if you're on it too long it just draws the calcium right out of your bones! I was on it for nine years - until they told me I should only have been on it one or two (WTF??). I'm only 37, and i already have osteopenia. Early osteoporosis!
Take lots of calcium and do lots of exercise! Other than that? I LOVED it! it was my "vaccine" - a shot in the butt every three months, and I was safe. And yes, it WAS still effective with antibiotics. __________________ They don't ever lock ya up for thinking crazy - they only get ya for actin' crazy! As to the birthcontrol and antibiotic issue, I have a 20 year old son because I had a sinus infection and was not informed about the side effects of the antibiotics. Now my doctor recommends using an alternate form of birthcontrol for 30 days, just in case. __________________ I've been married for 24 years and have four wonderful children. |
