What are your preferences?
I haven't seen a Gynae in YEARS. I've since moved cities anyway, and I've forgotten the setails of the one I saw all those years ago. So the hunt begins anew. Do you feel more comfortable with a female or a male gynae? I know this is a personal opinion, but I am interested to hear what reasons you have for choosing either. What else do you consider when choosing one? I have no partner (Sexual or otherwise) at the moment, and am on the fence about having children, so these are not things I really need to consider.

I was apprehensive about seeing a male Gynecologist for the first time, but honestly, it wasn't as bad as I thought. He was really professional and I didn't feel nearly as embarrassed as I thought I would.
Although, I haven't been in a few years because of apprehension over the speculum. But that's a different story.

Met a female gyn last week. I was very relaxed with her. My current dentist is a female and comfortable with her too.
Personality comes into it too and if you aren't comfortable with that person then the gender they are is irrelevant. Good luck on your search. |

I see a male and he's actually better than most of the females I've seen. Very professional yet friendly. Gender doesn't matter to me.

Gender does not matter to me. That being said almost all my doctors have been male.

Do you think a woman would come across as more understanding/empathetic?

I definitely prefer female GYNs, who I've found to be more naturally empathetic and willing to listen to my concerns rather than dismissing them.

My gyn is a young man. I like and trust him very much. I've found that many times, men tend to be more sympathetic than women.

Definitely female. Females have the parts and know more what it's like to experience exams, so are more understanding and gentle. I've had both male and female, so I know what I'm talking about!

No preference, really.
When it came down to choosing an OB/GYN during the planning years, I went with reputation in this geographical area. |

@ Healingme4me - there are SOOOOOO many recommendations in our area, that I guess I am spoilt for choice.
There are a few colleagues/friends at work that are currently pregnant, so I am tempted to ask them for their recommendations. I just don't feel brave enough to have the discussion yet, as it is naturally a very personal topic.

My male Dr always has his female assistant in the room when he does exams. I think they are uncomfortable for both of us but what can you do, it's a necessary evil.

@sugarhorse1, there are plenty of praised dr's in my area, as well. Back then, I remember being concerned about an old injury and how it could have affected me in childbirth. Due to how my oldest positioned himself, along with a full head of hair that limited any way to tell he was wrong side up, I wound up with a csection. Years later I want to say a tech(u/s) or another dr commented on my incision with a guess to who has a solid reputation for their fine surgical skills.
Sometimes, it's necessary to make consult appointments, to see if they are a good match for you. I had with this doctor. |

I've seen both but currently I see a male. He's better than the former ones. Very professional and makes it not a big deal. His female
Assistant is always there in the room for exams so I feel safe. I think I'll stick with him if I can. He diagnosed my PCOS and helps me control it.

I prefer male. Have mostly seen male gyns over the years because of a bad experience I had with a female gyn when I was about 20. All three kids delivered by male doctors.

I look at a local magazine that lists top doctors. I have to have the best doctors, or I won’t trust them.
Make vs. female is a personal preference. I’ve used both. |

I'm more comfortable with the male gyno. I just don't much care for women checking me out down there. They're professional bring in a nurse, but that's my preference.
