I have thinner hair on one side and a hairdresser asked me what side I tend to sleep on more. She said if you sleep on one side more than the other, the hair will thin quicker on that side.

Hair loss can be cause by stress......when i was doing my parents threw hospice , and at home, my hair was falling out at a alarming rate. Once i got the stress undercontrol it stopped. Also I think can be side effects of some meds. You would have to look online.
Also the way you sleep to is possable.
And also TRM could be right! LOLOLOLOL

My hair loss is hereditary. When I was 19 years of age, I began to develop a triangle of thinness on the front top of my hair. Now, at 42, my hair loss has spread gradually over my whole top and it is now starting to go down the back of my head.

I have been debating wearing a wig, but I don't feel like myself when I wear a wig. Hairdressers are telling me that it is beyond restoration now. Stress only makes it worse. BUT, I know I am not alone in this and I can still look good with thin hair.

Hair loss in women constitutes a disorder whereas comperable hair loss in men (that is caused by precisely the same mechanisms) is not.

It might be worth going to your doctor to check about this. If you have health insurance then treatments might be funded through that. The treatments involve taking a tablet, I think. You need to keep on taking it because if you stop then you will continue to lose hair. I think the time to take it is BEFORE the hair has been lost in order to prevent more of it. I'm not sure that you regrow hair that has already been lost.

Mine has been coming out too, lately -- not sure if it's med-related this time. Several years ago when I was on Depakote, it started coming out in clumps, but that's a known side effect of that med. All I'm on now is Seroquel and Effexor and the occasional Ativan, and I don't think hair loss is related to any of them, but haven't checked for sure.

My last pdoc (the one who actually took the time to talk to me, instead of getting me in and out of his office in under 5 minutes) said that sometimes hair loss can be a result of not having enough of some mineral in your diet. I can't remember the name of it offhand -- selenium, maybe? And another one that started with a Z. I can't take multivitamins anymore (interferes with a med I can't ever go off of, ever), but maybe it will work for somebody else.

Perna and Alexandra:

Thank you very much for that information. I was taking medication as a child which contributed to my hair loss at that time. When I cam off of the medication, my hair did not grown back, but the hair loss stopped.

Now, I am on Depo Provera to control my seizures by stopping my cycles. This is contributing now to my hairloss again. Now I need to make some decisions.

How about switching to a contraceptive pill that lowers androgens?

That would help prevent hairloss and help promote growth (according to Perna's really great website link) and might control your cycle related difficulties.

The depo-provera I am on also promotes hair growth, but in the wrong areas. I have chin growth, upper lip growth and decrease on the scalp lol. The problem with birth control is that I am not taking to for birth control. I had my tubes tied in 1993. The problem is that my menstrual cycles were triggering my seizures. So to stop the seizures, I had to stop the cycles. I don't think the other meds will do that.

My doctor put me on a birth control pill called Lybrel that stops your cycle as well. It caused depression in me, so I had to come off it. But I don't think hair loss is a side-effect of it.

From what I understand, it can also be a side effect of some illnesses. I think it can happen with hypo- or hyper- thyroid, for example.

If it were me, I would probably talk to my doctor about it.

I agree that the thyroid can be an influence on hair growth, but my doctor has been testing me for thyroid imbalances for some time without results.

There is some heredity in this also. By teh age of 19, I had thinned in a triangular shaped on the top of the head and I know it was an inherited trait from my Dad's side of the family but it only affects the women.

Tis being said, stress has also affected hair loss occasionally, but when the stress was taken care of, the hair returned. This latest hair loss of mine could be due to peri-menopause. I am in the throws of hot flashes lol. This morning, I felt like hot stuff. I can't get a doctor now until January due to the fact that I have moved. My new health care won't kick into effect until January so I have to wait to see a doctor about it. I geuss I just have to wait it out until then.
