A little over 3 weeks ago, I had bilateral facet joint injections in the lumbar region of my back. The medicine used was corticosteroid. I have had these injections twice before and never had a problem.

Four days after the shots, I developed anxiety from hell and was climbing the walls, one day it was so bad that I couldn’t go to work. Just panic attacks non-stop.

I was due to have my period right around the time of the injections. That didn’t happen. There is no chance of pregnancy. 2 weeks ago, I started spotting brown discharge non-stop and yesterday I started seeing more red which suggested to me that maybe the period is finally beginning. Or has this thing that’s been going on for 2 weeks the actual period? I never have irregular periods and I am almost 37.

I went to my GP last Wednesday because I’ve been suffering from extreme fatigue and loss of appetite, she did bloodwork and all of my results were normal. I told her about the spotting/period stuff and she told me to give it another week, and that if it didn’t end she told me to call her (because getting an appointment at the OBGYN takes forever). She said she could give me a limited run of hormones for 10 days to get things back on track (Provera, which has estrogen but not progesterone). I am very hesitant to go down that road because I cannot handle any of that stuff...I have major depressive disorder and Loestrin gave me such a bad episode that it scared the living daylights out of me and I was told to stop it.

I feel like anything I do will have a bad price to pay and I’m frustrated. This fatigue is killing me and worsening my depression. Yesterday I cried at acupuncture because I was so tired of being tired. I’m sore from 2 weeks of spotting and having to wear a pad because it’s too much fluid for a liner and not enough for a tampon.

Has anyone else suffered from anything like this after a cortisone injection? I’m kind of upset with pain management for not telling me about adverse reactions ahead of time.

I don't have experience with cortisone injections. I do recall being tossed off kilter with prednisone and antibiotics.

No side effects for me, but I've heard they can affect other people. I'll research the topic....
