Yuck, I hate talking about this stuff, but I have a question....

I have, apparently, a yeast infection. It seems they come along with uncontrolled blood sugar. Doc gave me 3 scripts for it. I have filled exactly none, and don't plan to, because I already have nearly $200 worth of meds to pick up tomorrow and I just can't handle any more.

So....not being experienced in these things (UTIs yes, these, no)....does the OTC stuff work? Because (WARNING: GROSS ALERT) I am getting a little tired of the leakage and the smell, but I just can't afford more prescription drugs.

Blech, ick, and all that other sort of stuff. Thanks if you made it this far.

Candy sorry you got one of these. The OTC stuff can work pretty good. But if its a bad infection you might need to get the scrip. If I were you I'd also start eating some yogurt. I forget the active ingredient in it.. but it helps with yeast infections. Hope this helps. And take care ok? I hope you feel better soon!!

Go to your local Wal Mart or any drug store. Just a few years ago, the over the counter meds for yeast infection were prescription meds. I have used them and they work fine. Good Luck!

Candy, the OTC creams supposedly help with the itching at least too? Now, I know your business is reading and writing...but have you READ the prescriptions? Make sure they are for a yeast infection, I hadn't heard of getting 3 scripts for this. (I'm thinking you may have not bothered to read them, and that the doctor may have told you yeast infection but may suspect other stuff too and gave you meds for the whole lot.)

Hope it clears quickly.

Sky, I misspoke. One was a cream and one was a pill. The other one is for the rash on my legs, I think. She printed them all out on one sheet, which is still sitting in the back seat of my car....I'll look for sure later. However, every time I'm in, they do a med check, asking about new ones, dosage changes, etc. Her PA last time read off two I didn't recognize and asked if I'd finished them, and when I gave her a funny look, she said "for the yeast infection." Oops. icky girly issue

Not filling the one for the rash, either. I get them every so often and they eventually go away on their own. I keep getting told that if I keep scratching and manage to break the skin, I'm going to end up with cellulitis, but I've had it twice before and don't find it that big a deal, so I'm not worried about that either. I pay 20% of the total cost of each prescription and it adds up like you can't believe. I wish more doctors understood that. icky girly issue

Ok good... can you give them a call and see if they have any free samples of any of that? The link has some more natural remedies...

I don't like walmart, but do they carry this med now for the $4 cost they are advertising? (They just increased what they cover down here in FL)

before i found out i was hypoglycemic and my blood sugar was all over the place i used to get UTIs and yeast infections constantly. I found that the cream stuff from walgreens works. Ive never actually gotten a prescription for a yeast infection, they have always been controlled by OTC stuff. Now, some of it is just an ovule insert that clears it.

Hmm....you could always try the over-the-counter stuff first, and if that doesn't clear it up, then try the prescription. Maybe call your doctor first just to ask over the phone, and explain the money situation.

And yes - eat yogurt. The cultures can help with that stuff.

Did you ask to see how much the oral meds are? Last time I got them they were less then $20. One annoying thing is...if you do not get rid of a yeast infection totally then it will just come back and most likely worse. This is why if I get one I buy the OTC cream AND the oral meds from the Dr and just make sure I wipe it out and be done with it.

If this is going to be a continued issue for you because of blood sugar levels and such then I would recommend beginning to take Acidophilus every day. Its 100%natural as it should help a lot to keep them at bay

FYI You do eat the yogurt not put it down stairs but it wont get rid of an infection you already have.

candybear, try the over the counter stuff first. It gets rid of 90% of my yeast infections. I use the creams you insert with an applicator or the suppositories. Use them for the recommended number of days, not just until you feel better. If those don't completely cure it for me, I do a second course. If it's still not gone, I call the doctor and get an oral prescription, usually just a pill for 1-3 days. Works really well, but they are really strong, so I like to try the OTC stuff first.

Good luck.

The one dose with external ointment from Monistat worked for me. My dr didn't even write a Rx, just told me what to buy OTC. Perhaps yours is more severe because of your medical problems that's why doc gave you scripts. If you're on antibiotics + diabetes you may have a mega infection.

Ive used monostat AND ive used the perscript. Sure you could say the anti-itch creme they give you is messy, but you know what? If it helps, whats so wrong with one or two pairs of messy underwear? lol

Avoid persistent and excessive moisture in the genital area by wearing underwear or pantyhose with cotton crotches, and loose fitting slacks. Avoid wearing wet bathing suits or exercise clothing for long periods of time, and wash them after each use

i never had a otc med for this but i did get script for a suppositories and cream and i know you can by the same cream here over the counter so take script to chemist ask if you can buy that paticular med over the counter first before trying others, these two sound good otc meds miconazole or clotrimazole.

Cranberry juice and yogurt are two foods that may help prevent the occurrence of yeast infections and aid in their treatment
good luck
