I've been unemployed since April 2008. I'm still putting in job applications online, just not as many as I used to...the unemployment extension doesn't apply for me, so I'm still homeless and wonder what's going to happen this winter if I'm still unemployed and get timed out of the shelter I'm in (it gets cold here in the winter) I've worked steadily for 25 years and I can't get 2 years unemployment?? Where's MY billion dollar bailout???

I'm thinking it's also because of my age (I'll be 49 in December), employers don't want to train someone who's going to retire in 10-15 years...
I think it's time to start the Socialist Revolution now...

You bet your bippy, Catman, if you can remember that far back! The Socialist Revolution is long, long overdue! I'm 65, the recession (ha! depression!) wiped us out, and I haven't been able to get a job for 2 years. Sure I get social security. It won't pay the bills, though. And for poor bastards like yourself who aren't of retirement age there isn't even that compensation! We eat beans or pasta every day. As I'm sure you do too. And there's NOTHING optimistic I can say to you with a straight face. Nothing at all. If you find someone who's putting together an activist socialist party, pm me and I'll be very interested indeed. Those disgusting right wing bastards just want to cut us loose and watch us drown. And, believe it or not, many of them (as you well know) consider themselves CHRISTIANS!!!

You are not alone Catman, there are several members here at PC who, like you are homeless. We would be also homeless, except we atleast have a camper to live in, and due to a wonderous individual who paid for our fuel to get to Florida, from the cold north. I have met a few and have seen many people here in Florida, who are living in tents, cars, vans, whatever they can find. I even see them riding around on old bicycles with everything they own strapped to them, riding off back dirt roads towards dusk to find a place to sleep for the night. The bugs and humidity are awful, but it sure beats freezing to death. Unfortunetly in the state of Florida, a person can not get cash assistance unless you have minor children living in your home. But we were able after being here for 4 months to get Food Stamps.

One of my biggest peeves is not being able to understand the greed that seems to dominate the world. I am a true believer, that every person in the world should be entitled to have food in their bellies, clothes on their backs, a roof over their heads, education and health care.

So I guess my next question is....How do a handfull of us so called "crazies" change our world for the better?

I also have a problem understanding, why with all the empty and vacated properties, people just don't go and become squatters in them. Maybe if enough people did, the govt wouldnt be able to arrest them all, because of lack of man power, jails and hospital beds available, and would eventually through their hands up in the air and say "let them have it".

Maybe communes started by the homeless masses, in vacated buildings/houses/farms, might be a start....idk....Im frustrated too. Good Luck, and keep us posted.

So, I guess you're a "closet Socialist", ha, ha...I guess I should consider myself lucky, because I can get food stamps...and I also get some meals from the shelter. I've heard there are already people squatting in abandoned buildings in the cities, but the cops keep running them off, sooner or later...but if things don't get better soon, I think it WILL get to the point where they won't be able to run them off....

I keep thinking of that march in Washington DC back in the early '30s sometime-the government wanted to cut off benefits to the WW 1 vets, or something like that...I can't find anything about it on the 'net about it (either my inability to use search engines, or the government has it censored so us unemployed people don't get any ideas....)

One thing I've learned about "Christians" over the years-the bigger the Bible thumper, the bigger the hypocrite....the sad part about it is that the Democrats aren't much better...

I listen to Thom Hartmann on the radio as much as possible (there isn't a station around here that carries his show, but I listen to him on the computer) He's about the sanest talk show host I've come across (AND he's written a few books about ADHD that I'd like to read-hey, an idea for when they shut off the computer-off to the circulation desk!!)
