I emailed a friend today about getting together for coffee at the end of the month, which he agreed to, and said he'd been meaning to call me anyway. He's president of a small publishing company, I used to work in publishing, and know him from when we both worked at the same big publishing company.
He said he had some project work helping them get through their year end, and would I be interested. It was hard not to scream YES! At the end of this month, it'll be a year that I've been unemployed, and my employment insurance runs out end of next week, so anything that brings some cash in is good. I told him I was totally interested, but ideally if it could be done part time in the afternoons that was best because I am currently repeating rehab. I will drop out of rehab if I find a permanent or long term contract, but I don't want to do it for just anything. He said definitely stay in rehab, and that part time was fine. He said we could probably work it out initially that they'd just email me the raw data and I could prepare the reports at home. How awesome would that be. He's going to call me on Mon. to talk about details. splitimage |

Awesome - thanks for the support everyone. I wound up talking to my friend today, instead of yesterday, and it's going to work out. There initially going to send me the raw data and the report templates so that I can work on them from home.
He agreed to the hourly rate I wanted. And the best part is that even though I'll only be working casual hours for them, they're going to put me on their payroll, which means I don't have to register for a business number or charge, collect, and remit HST which is a major hassle. Being on payroll, also means that my taxes, CPP and EI deductions will all be done at source which is a lot easier for me, from a record keeping perspective, and it means I'll start building up hours in my EI bank again. They'll probably start to have some work for me next week. It won't be a lot of money, but anything is better than nothing, and even better, it'll be something current that I can put on my resume. Thanks everyone. I actually got my contract via e-mail today. They've reneged on the payroll, and want to pay me an an independent contractor, which isn't a big enough deal to make a fuss over. It's an open ended contract, but I figure they'll need me through year end and the audit in April, which would at least get me through Rehab. No guarantees about how many hours a week it'll be, but anything is better than nothing which is what I currently got - and I only have to work 15 hours a week to match what i was getting from employment insurance, but hopefully I'll get closer to 20 hours a week. I'm to sign and send the contract back by mail, but as soon as i send an email saying it's in the mail, they're going to start shipping me work.
And best of all, this is a real concrete, current job that I can put on resume, ending the increasingly awkward unemployment gap. I'm very happy about this. splitimage |
