So I've been looking desperatly for a job since I got fired just before Yule last year. That was my first job, and I only held it for 3 months. (I'll be 20 in September.) They accused me of stealing (which I think was a mix up with another girl that worked there that looked just like me). They used business language I didn't grasp onto fast enough when they called me into the meeting, and I thought they told me if I signed their papers I would be able to keep my job. Obviously, I didn't get to keep it. Anyway, I learned my lesson from that, but was unemployed for six months. I've been living with my girlfriend for 2 years, and that was the only time I was able to bring money in. I've felt completly useless ever since. I got a job at a coffee shop a few months ago, but it only lasted 2 days and they told me I wasn't right for it. I went on an interview last week and got a call back to go for training on monday. I basicly have the job, but I'm worried about keeping it. Any advice?

Firstly Congratulations on getting that job!!! I am not a good person for advice on this, as I can’t get pass interview stages. However try not to judge yourself or hold the negativity with you from your pass experiences, jobs. I think this is where I go wrong as well myself. This can lead to you sort of self-defeating your chances of keeping the job before you have even started. Try to look at this as you have got this far because of a reason… which is you are suited and cable of this job. Otherwise they wouldn’t have given you this opportunity. Really try to have an open mind. I can understand and do know this is a lot easier said than done but really sometimes it’s these things that can get in our way and chances to progress. Sorry if my reply was no help. Wish you all the best and good luck with this job

Angel, congrats on getting the job! You must be so relieved to be able to bring in money again. That was the worst part of my unemployment. The big day is tomorrow, isn't it? I know this may seem like really stupid and over simplistic, but since you asked for advice on keeping your new job and mentioned that you have a negative attitude that gets you into trouble sometimes, how about if you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all? I know that doesn't address the issue of why your negative attitude kicked up or how to deal with it in a more effective way. But it can help you get through the day and keep your job. Can you text a friend when something comes up at work that pisses you off? I've done that many times to vent my anger and frustration before responding to the issue. Let us know how it goes!

Lost Angel, congrats on your new job! I have been fired from jobs before and I know the feeling... like someone mentioned above, don't hold onto any bitterness or negative thoughts from your past experience. You are young and learning to navigate the working world, and you will.
My advice to keep this job is to make yourself as useful as humanly possible. During training, take the initiative to ask questions and learn as much as possible. Once you are trained, look for things that need doing and take it upon yourself to get it done. Maybe offer to pick up shifts when people call out, etc. This will let them know you are a team player and actually happy to be there. Also, try not to be intimidated by management. Smile and make small talk with them, get to know them and say positive things when they are around. Believe it or not they would prefer not to spend their time with write ups and having to replace staff constantly. It will make their lives easier if you stay on as an employee and succeed, so work with them and go to them immediately if you have any concerns about your performance. Ask them for their advice on how to improve and put that in action. Good luck! |

Just got through my first day in-store. It went great. This job fits me very well, everything is labeled, dated and organized and very simple for me to understand and grasp onto. I'm still very excited about it, I think it will help me in more ways than just bringing money in. I'm hoping it will make it so I can take a lot of the burden off my girlfriend and help in my personal goals, as well. I think today is a sign of many more good days to come. I in in tomorrow at 6am, so I guess I'll find out then!

So I'm going on two weeks on the job now. And I am still absolutely loving it. All of my managers and coworkers are amazing. I've finished just about all of my training. Its only supposed to be a part time position, but because I work so hard, the head manager is giving me as close to full time hours as she can. Actually, she has me working my first midnight shift tomorrow night. Which means I'll be running the place on my own! Its hard to believe that she has that much confidence in me after only two weeks. I'm pretty proud of myself! I hope to stay at this job for a long time, and hopefully move up the ladder to full time and then manager. I love it.
