I got bought-out nearly 5 year's ago and have been working on many freelance projects. I'm loyal with excellent communication skills and not afraid of the long hours. However, I keep running into bad people. Bad? Young H-R people and hiring managers who think I'm a threat to their own jobs. I'm well established on Linked-In and follow the many job sites for new positions. I know the high paying jobs are a thing of the past but no one will give me a chance to prove myself. I've always been mentally tough and stayed positive throughout all of this. Now, this no full-time work deal has started to get to me and cause sleepless nights, anxiety and minor depression. People, either career counselor or headhunter, claim they can help but "send the check or credit card number first." I don't think help exists?

I don't really have any helpful advice to give you, except that I understand how frustrating it is to try to find a new position. Try to stay strong and have good luck.

Oh, but I would never send a check or my credit card information to someone promising me a job. Jobs should be paying you...not the other way around. Ya know?

Do you have friends you can call upon to provide you with an in to someplace? If you have not done this, please consider asking them. You can put it that you like free-lancing but you'd rather go back to a steady job. I noticed you said you are "not afraid of the long hours." Your approach may be too old-school for the people who are interviewing you. If you have a younger person who can coach you on how to interview that might be ideal. What is it you do? If you can share that, people may have other, more specific ideas. Hang in there. I feel for you.

Personally, I just think there is a sense of desperation in the labour market, too many people available, and too many mind games in hiring practices and resumes and job search now. People can't just be themselves on a resume, they have to BS, elaborate, modify and design so many times, that hiring crew play head games in hiring to get info they are not allowed to ask, interviewees are getting tired, it is just so mind boggling now. The HR industry is so polluted, nobody knows what to make of it anymore.

For those seeking, and those hiring, there needs to be a lot of weeding out of corruption but in the end it still comes down to the bottom line instead of quality and satisfaction of crew and company.

Have you checked your local library, college, university for employment workshops? They often have free or inexpensive courses on resume writing and interview skills. Maybe your experience is intimidating to managers and there is a different way of presenting your strengths.

Good hunting
