My coworker's husband works at this engineering firm and there's an administrative assistant position opening up. My coworker (who is really like a mom to me) keeps telling me how I'm too smart for this kind of work, etc. She's so nice and supportive. Her husband is not the hiring manager, but he said he would take my resume/cover letter to HR. I've never asked for help before with getting a job. I feel a little weird about it.

I don't know her outside of work. All of the jobs I've ever held were obtained on my own. Am I being silly about this?

You're not being silly, but it would be unwise to turn down the assistance! A lot of jobs nowadays are filled by networking - exactly like this sort of situation.

If anybody is offering to assist you to obtain a job, take the help!!! Contacts in the workplace are the most precious assets around.

Think of it as someone just knowing there's an opening and you happen to know people who know your work and that it is good and that you'd be an asset to your friend's husband's engineering firm. Be proud of yourself!

NEVER turn down help at getting a much needed job! If someone offers help, TAKE IT. It's hard enough getting a job these days without help, let alone when you GET help.

I'm sure glad you knew these woman. I hope her husband can push your resume' thru. Best of luck and let us know if you get the job, ok? God bless and prayers coming your way! Hugs, Lee

It sounds like all that's being offered is the chance to get your name in the pot, and maybe get your CV read a little more closely. YOU still have to get the interview and the job. Don't feel weird about it, say thank you, give them your CV and prepare for the interview. Weird would be if there was something sneaky going on. This sounds like the perfect use of professional connections.

Good luck.
