I just got an awesome temp job that I think I will love but the shift is midnight-7 or 8 a.m.

How do i make myself become a night owl?
I will leave for work about 11:30 at night and be home maybe 8 in the morning or so.

I do pretty well staying up late. I will also be able to watch tv, be online, and there are things I can do to keep up.

Any ideas how I start training myself to be up late at night? Currenly my favorite sleep hours are 1 a.m. to 9 a.m.

I guess I could start this weekend staying up late, sleeping late, and take some naps while I adjust?

Any ideas?

Lots of people have trouble doing the 3rd shift. Currently, I'm on a half-assed third shift schedule doing 4 am -noon sleep.

I think the key is to power through that first night and let yourself sleep as much as possible after you're done. Black out the room and sleep till like 5-6 pm if that's what it takes.

I shifted to working the graveyard shift when I was 19. The hardest part is getting usedbto it, and it is a lifestyle.

I didn't start working days again until 2008...also hard to transition back to that lifestyle after working the vampire shift for so long.

After being let go from my day job i tried transitioning back into the vampire shift but the whole mental illness thing kinda stood in my way....dam brain

I'm naturally nocturnal but I have learned over the years that a noise maker was a must for me. There are many many noises during the day. Traffic, people mowing their lawns, neighbor's TVs and radios, construction just all types of crap. I cut cardboard to fit my windows so no light gets in when I don't want it to. I have a fan and a noise maker. I've turned my hubby nocturnal too. He swears that once the room is pitch black and with the fan and noise maker he can't tell the difference between sleeping during the day or at night.

Added bonus to working at night: Most businesses open between 7-9 am. So when you get off work you can go to the post office on the way home. Or go to the DMV when it's not crowded. Go pay a bill or whatever then still get home with plenty of time to unwind.

Good luck on your new job!!

I am doing pretty well so far. I am going to be working 11 pm to 7 am starting tomorrow, tonight it is just 12-6. I am handling it well tonight. I think it helps that i love what i am doing.

Glad to hear you like the job. Night shift is my preferred shift. I am naturally nocturnal I guess.

Please ignore if too personal but what is your job? I'm just curious because you really like it. Almost everyone I ever talk to HATES their job. Me I'm a night manager at a gas station. I get locked in by myself until the next shift comes in. It's just me, paperwork, cleaning and the occasional customer but I really like it. Don't know why but I prefer to be the only one here.

I'm glad you are holding up I know it can really mess with some people to flip their days and nights. Wishing you continued success on your new job
